Since I’m a ways a way from being able to build and have an actual layout, this will be a great outlet for my imagination, and maybe satisfy my itch.

Dear Dave, awesome vid, love the madness of the foam core method. Absolutely agree on the intrinsic value of making a 3D model of model railroad. Very interesting how you approach this with the foam core. Am pretty sure the roster of the Thunder Mesa isn’t yet available in T-gauge. Nevertheless, I humbly think it would be interesting to even add that extra layer. Might be the 3D mockup should be a tad bit larger to accommodate the 1:450 scale. Just as thought. The mockup as a tool definitely has its advantages. Cheerio

That's it 😂 I'm hanging up my modelling belt and tools. I struggle to make normal sized models look good, and you've just made a scale model of your model, and detailed it. Looks awesome 👍🏼 looking forward to the upcoming installments

Hey Dave... Your attention or should I say obsession with details is gob-smacking. Given your predilection for precise perfection...(I like alliteration) ..... where are the teeny, tiny, perfectly painted in fine detail, people in your model? Just kidding...kind of.🤔 Once again your abilities amaze! Thanks.

Wow, I had never thought of building a model of a model before. After I watched your video, I found a CD about building Tom Millers F scale railroad and they did the same thing. I am so going to do this. I think this really helps visualize final construction before it begins. Thank you for sharing all your techniques.

What Dave, you didn't paint the clouds on the back drop? lol! Found your channel a couple years ago, and really enjoy watching you build the original layout. Looking forward to Thunder Mesa 2.0. I hope that the ruined cliff dwelling will make it into the new layout.

What a great way to pre-visualize your layout! Or as they say in the film industry “Pre-Vis”. And something Disney Imagineering has done way back when DIsneyland was being planned! (And your local hoppy/art supply shop thanks you!)

The Foamcore has paper laminated to each side which a hotwire tool won't cut through.

For years I drew plans with pencil and paper; lately using a CAD program. I've always thought building planning models was a waster of time. For a multi level layout such as you're building, I now see how this can be of benifit.

Very nice video on your process. How did you determine the size of each section? Was that done when designing the new layout? And what were the drivers for those dimensions? I ask because I am planning my new layout for my office/loft, the area I have is 11 x 16 but I am going to do the base build in my garage and bring it upstairs to the loft. I may have to build a mockup to see what I can do to make the curves I will have to do. I have options. Thanks for all the wonderful videos.
