4 years into having made this fixture, do you ever use it?

Hahahh- like many jigs they get used rarely but I’ve used it for laminating a few backs over the years. The radius dish I use on every build. I would use this for every build if I laminated every back.

How would you go about carving a concave dish since you cannot plane it?

You have to make radiused rails that pivot on the dishes center and use a router. It’s messy work and I’ve never done it - I’d rather spend $100 and buy one.

Great explanation of the process. Sounds like it took a long time. But I do have to chastise you over that conversion table on the wall behind you. Please just give up on fractions; they are absolutely pointless (pun intended). Whether you go metric or remain Imperial, just use decimal. The numbers make sense, you can see instantly how much bigger one measurement is than another, and to increase your accuracy you just stick another digit on the end.

Thanks- This first one took 2 days on and off- eg- i put the pink stuff on around dinner time the first day so waited overnight to get started again). Now I have the process, i could make one in a few hours (not including glueing wait time for the 2 x ply layer substrate, and letting the spackling dry (the tub says 2-5 hours from pink to white). Still- you could make one start to finish in a day, including glue and spackling wait time.- there is always other stuff to do in the workshop to fill in the time. The planing took about 20-30 mins?- applying the spackling is only a few minutes. I never look at that poster- but i prefer it to a bare door! hahahha

Can it be used for laminating tops also? Do braces still need to be used for the top even after laminating?

This dome could be used for laminating tops too. I'll say that all tops need braces. That isn't exactly correct, but it is safer to say that here without indepth discussion about it.

title should be "how to duplicate a radius dish". No explanation on how to make brand new one. good video anyway but was looking for something different.

To duplicate a radiused dish would be to end up with to radius dishes....which is not at all what I do. I make a radiused dome.
