Enjoyed watching this thank you. Such a lovely idea to leave it for someone to find. It will make their day.

Thank you - I've been wearing them odd for years now. I think my face does appear in a few of my videos - I'm not deliberately hiding it (although I can't claim that it's a treat to look at, either) - I guess it's just that the action is always happening somewhere else.

This is fab! I tried it, but couldn't get it to work - I think the knot was too big. Either I'm using the wrong reeds or I'm not great at it I'll keep trying. Anyway, great work!

I don’t understand the steps at all :( you said grab the one you just passed and pass it over again? Or pass the one before it over two? Or the one after it over two?

I'll try to do a new video on this soon, but to try to describe it, if you have 5 reeds, you take reed 3, bend it so it goes over number 2 and 1, then take number 1, bend it over the reed you just laid down, and number 5, then take number 5 and bend it over the reed you just laid down...

I made corn dollies when I was little back in the '70s, thanks for reminding me how. I'll pass the skill on to children this summer. Did you add new reeds in or are they long enough for the whole thing?
@AtomicShrimp
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks - I didn't need to splice any in - they were long enough for the whole thing (each reed only gets shorter by the length of one straight side, for each layer of the construction, so a little goes a long way)

AtomicShrimp Thanks for the speedy reply! I am trying to work out where to get reeds near here... Fired up to make one. Meant to be practicing nettle cord but took a wrong turn on youtube....

I make these by rolling up strips of newspaper pages, about 3" wide & as long as the newspaper is when unfolded. I use a skewer or knitting needles to roll the strips into thin tubes. The needle has to be placed on one of the corners at an angle. Glue the paper at the triangle that is left at the opposite end you started from. One opening will be wider than the other end, & they can be inserted into each other to make continuous tubes. I've made some cute items by using these paper straws, or tubes, that are like the reeds. Spray them with paint, then spray, or brush on, some Polycrillic coating to make them stay in the shape you created. No, they're not waterproof, but still are fun to craft!

Do they last long, or do they become brittle over time and break?
@AtomicShrimp

The reed shrinks as it dries and they become loose and flexible, but this makes them like a fidget toy - they can be twisted and they expand/contract

Where can you get corn?
@AtomicShrimp

To make corn dollies? I think it can be ordered online from somewhere that sells basket making materials. Modern barley and wheat varieties have been bred with short stalks, but there is still a market for the long stalk varieties for people who make thatched roofing and other traditional crafts
