Hi Jeff, Very nice work. I haven't seen too many sewing machine bases on KZitem. Wonder why. I am thinking of building one for a machine with a side facing hook. With my large paws, I want to have features that help me access the bobbin area. Maybe an opening in the left side, or some kind of rear anti-tipping support so I can lift and rotate the machine back like is done in a sewing cabinet. Here is my armchair question. Do you need to square up the base when you glue and clamp?
@JeffRevell

If you have the original machine hinges you can just make the back wall thicker and install them like you would in a table. Of course you would need to add some swing-out stabilizer wings so the whole thing wouldn't flip over due to the weight of the machine. I have seen a few designs like that on Etsy.

@@JeffRevell- I'll have to take a look at Etsy. I have some of those hinges that I saved from a table. I had the same Idea about the swing-out stabilizer, or possibly some long dowels that slip into holes in the back. Thanks for the tips.

What species and what dimension of wood did you use for this project?

OMG! beautiful!! I bought a Singer 99k from somebody on Ebay years ago. The fabric that they stick on it was in really rough condition but the actual base (like what built here), was in ok condition. The machine, thankfully, was perfect (and still is), but the top to the case was destroyed,. I still have what's left of it. The handle and parts of the latches. I tried to buy one of those old fashioned roundish ones but, would you believe it, that arrived destroyed too! I wish I knew how to do this. Did you make a top? I'd love to see it!
@JeffRevell

Unfortunately, I don't make the tops as they require a bit more work because the wood is steam-bent to form the top. Also, the wood that was used for those old bentwood (that's what they are called) tops is not in huge supply anymore. Perhaps one day I'll get around to trying my hand at one.

@@JeffRevell no! That is a different kind of case. Google singer 99k or look one up on Ebay and you'll see. I still have my top but the dovetail joinery is smashed. How can I get photos to you?

Michaela Cannon you can send them to my email - jrswoodshop@gmail.com I’m most familiar with the ones that came with bentwood cases ( www.google.com/search?q=singer+99k+case&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS591US592&hl=en-US&prmd=sinv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi2lZ-4laviAhVGTt8KHd3GADcQ_AUoAnoECAsQAg&biw=414&bih=608#imgrc=oG_92KPKzpEx7M ) but the ones from the UK did come in a variety of case styles.

Does it need to have joints for a specific purpose or just regular nails/screws will be sufficient?
@JeffRevell

I used the box joints as a decorative feature as well as for structural joinery. If you just want something functional you could absolutely use screws. I would never use nails as they don't really have the holding power of a screw.
