Today I make a ssangsudo bokken with my brother! The ssangsudo is a historical Korean sword from the Joseon dynasty which was incredibly long. I have built mine similar to the specifications outlined in Muyebodotongji.
Mine has a 1 cheok 5 chon handle ~45cm, a 1 cheok habaki ~30cm and a 4.5 cheok total blade length as opposed to the muyedobotongji 5 cheok blade length. This was simply because I did not want to make it too long, given my height.
The bokken is made from tasmanian oak and finished with renaissance wax. It is definitely lighter than a steel ssangsudo but likely balances similarly to a steel one. It is important to note that ssangsudo historically had quite slender blades and were quite thin for maneuverability and Muyedobotongji states they weighed roughly 1.8 - 2 kilograms.
Huge thanks to my brother for joining me on this episode and lending me his tools and time.
