Hi Micah. I can not thank you enough for literally changing my whole family's lives. We live at the bottom of the biggest hill in North London. The turning point for me was a "bike ride" - we pushed our bikes to the top of the hill - my 10 year old son got tired and we came back - some bike ride! I then discover and followed this video - using the brilliant idea of using hoverboard batteries but using hub motors instead. I used a 36V 250W front wheel hub motor for my first bike (a scrap bike project with my son) and then 36V 350W rear wheel hub motors on the bikes for the rest of my family. I packed the controller and battery inside a saddle bag and hid the wiring. We now cycle all the time. My son and I have just finished a 30 mile bike ride through the heart of London city (I just carried a couple of spare hoverboard batteries in my backpack - we get about 15 miles from 1 36V 5Ah hoverboard battery). I have electric bikes for ALL of my family for much less than my friend paid for his 1 electric bike). I would love to share some pictures if that is possible, could you please let me know how I can do that. Thanks so so much again. Mat

I came from ZERO knowledge to enough to pull the trigger on one kit. My bike is far from ordinary, the frame is an alien but is a awesome bike i bought it in 2000 at sams club for 75$ MOTIVE is the brand, never needed a tuneup or anything. Now that i had to take a part to install this kit, i see how well made this bike is. The worries you have to have is: pick your size of motor. I picked the 48v1000v hub, because i could not find a 48v500w with a good price. Second, the opening of the rear forks, usually is 5"1/4".Third: very important is the twist or thumb throttle, i opted for twist and my bike has a twist shift already, cant use it, i should opt for thumb, thumb throttle goes with every bike. Forth: your battery has to provide for your motor, i am building a 48v16A for this motor but. In the mean time i ma using a 36v8Ah battery that i found on the junkyard. And it works i was able to hit 28m/h but it hiccups a lot when i open the full throttle At once. I am very hand building and modifying stuff. If you are little handy, you will be fine.

I've worked as a mountain bike mechanic and at various bike shops in the Utah/Colorado area for many years now. That being said, these ebike conversion kits destroy bikes very quickly. People bring them in all the time to get repairs done and the damage is always very extensive and expensive. My recommendation if you do install these kits is do not cheap out on the bike you install them on. The higher quality the bike is, the more abuse the frame and components can take without causing permanent damage to them. And less damage means a more reliable, longer lasting build. With bikes, you definitely get what you pay for.

In 2018 I made my first e-bike. Nothing fancy, just under 200 euro, bicycle included. The hub motor wasn't mounted on the rim, so I had to use spare parts from an old bike I had. Tip: spokes from a 20' wheel work in a 26' rim and 250w geared hub motor. I bought the 18650 cells new from aliexpress, as the bms and the charger. From 70 euro I got a nice custom-shaped 36v 10ah pack. Also I had a bag laying around, so no money here. The bike itself was a 1990 high-end mountain bike. A little bit worn out, so it cost me only 30 euro. Keep in mind that I'm a student, and I still need a cheap transport. I ride it daily, and works like a charm. I'd say it was a good investment.

for those who are thinking about building this kit for your bike realize that you're buying a super cheap build over budget build. basically, the stage where you wished you spent the extra cash and time to buy better stuff instead of cheaping out and buying bottom tier stuff. I'm not talking about a huge cash increase I'm only talking about $50 to at least $100 more invested and you get a superior e-bike instead of a meh bike. first is the motor, hub motors are the most common for diy e bike they run anywhere from $150 to $200 the most common brand here on youtube from what I've seen is voilamart you can get a 1000w motor for about $156.99 on eBay, there's a kid on youtube that goes by eli's workshop that got this hub motor to go 40mph but he overvolted it by quite a lot and he probably only weighed 100 pounds at least. normally motors like this typically get around 20mph or 35 kph which in some areas is the most you can legally do in a e-bike and some areas limit by the watts and or voltage so be aware of the laws in your area. batteries are kind of tricky if you wanted new batteries I would go with lipos for 48volt you would need around $200 and for 36volt around $150 and they would perform a lot better than the balance board batteries. the next route would be to source 18650s from ebay or another source most of the good cells that you would want are around $0.50 to $1 for a 2200mah cell and a decent amp drain. you can even use this guys kit on vruzend.com to put it together the v1.6 kit cost $34.99 and holds 52 cells and the v2.1 kit cost $39.99 and holds 30 cells the difference is the v1.6 was very snug on the cell making it hard to make and take apart and the v2.1 he said to have fixed these things and of course v1.6 holds more than v2.1. I built my 13s 7p (52volt) about 14-15000mah battery for about $150 in total with the bms and it fits into the small ammo case you see everywhere, cheapest at harbor freight if on sale it's like $3. so for about $300-$350 and a little elbow grease you can get a quality e-bike for at least 1/4 the cost of a commercial one and would arguably perform the same if not better. if you really can't spend the money or are just really cheap look on craigslist or offerup(seems to be more popular app in my area to post things) I bought a hub motor for like $40 and if you're really lucky I got a sondors ebike(it said it was sonders but it seems they dont make this version anymore on the website) for $50 because the guy left the bike outside and the hub motor rusted up and he didn't know what was wrong with it, took maybe 30mins to fix/scrape all the rust out and bam a working e-bike aluminum frame, lcd, trigger shifter, dual disc brake. So remember if you really don't have money there are other ways to get parts and if you were really that desperate you would be trying, waiting, and searching every nook and cranny anyways so why rush it when you there will be a bargain on your next project in the near future. if you're just doing this on a whim and just want a ebike you're really looking in the wrong place. diy is very much a hobby that you need to invest in to get proper results you need tools, equipment and most importantly time that normal people cant invest into one project. Take it from me who started out with just the cheapest 3d printer(anet a8) and went on to make e-longboards moved on to e-bikes and now to e-scooters which imo is the better of the 3 because of size, control, and portability and e-scooters are very popular now to get into and was probably the one I should've started out with. If you want to get into e-scooters the razr electric scooter is the best and by far the most widely available since they've been making them for years. the first scooters i got were 2 e300 for $40 although they were in terrible condition but it got me started and now it runs with very little modification like a quality scooter with good torque and speed. these things are cheap I probably have like 10 e300 in the shed, because they're so cheap as the last group of scooters i bought, were 3 brand new e300 for $20 because he kept it for so long his wife forced him to get rid of it and he didn't know how to fix it and all they needed were new batteries. opportunities await you if you want to buy anything for diy or other purposes. I've regularly gotten items that were worth 10 or maybe even 20 times more on the open market so just wait and see how far your money will stretch with just a little time and patience.

Mounted the tube and tire, but waiting til I get the battery(from China -which could take 2-3 weeks)to put it in on the bike. The battery, 48v 20ah cost me $138 +$30 shipping + $10 2 year warranty Also bought a headlight/horn, a bike lock for about $12, rain cover for $6, a rear rack for which I surmise I'll be mounting my battery, a couple of torque arms for rear hub. I paid $20 for the huffy bike All in all I'm in for about $500ish, which I'm good with considering the size of motor(have to keep it set on 750w to be street legal), the range and the extras. Thanks for all your guidance through your videos. Btw, I couldn't buy from aliexpress to save my life. I gave up on them. I have built an Ebike using the L-faster kit. It is really pretty simple but you do want to make sure you get the correct bike for this kit. I had to modify the motor bracket to fit the bike i wanted to use but wasn't that big of a problem if you can weld. I don't know about other kits but the left hand freewheel sprocket from L-faster will fall apart if you install it as packaged. They use a freewheel sprocket the is intended to be used on a right hand drive motor but just flip it around. The problem is that it has left handed treads so when the sprocket freewheels it will actually unscrew the retaining ring for the freewheel bearing. This is simple to fix with epoxy. I used some to connect the retaining ring to the motor adapter and it has worked very well. I have well over 300 miles on this bike with no issues. I have never had another Ebike so i can't do a comparison but i love the on i have.

Micah, we budget builders on ES have been using these for a while. I use the scooter packs in 72V configuration for my Cyclone. But, I've also built a budget ebike for a friend for $150 without motor with 4X of these packs and a bike ($15 used). Its a good entry level bike with a 36V 500W hub motor. That being said, I would pay the $130 for 36V500W with var PAS hub motor, 3x batteries for $90 for a total of $220 then maybe $10 in materials. The PAS is key to ebikes I think. ALSO, I've worked with these packs, they are Chinese domestic cells and low grade at it; DO NOT DRAW 10A from the PACK. You will ruin the pack. I would do 5A max so 10A in your 2X configuration so180-360W. I've put 5k miles on the packs but when I literally maxed them out trying to get 50mph on my 72V Cyclone; they took serious dumps. Love to see this budget bike in action. See my build thread on this in my channel about the budget ebike if you like ^___^

Hey, man, I stumbled upon your channel recently and i like it! I am doing an e-bike project myself, and i ordered almost the same old-school kit like you chose in this video (only with a bit more motor power - 450W). I think it would be very useful info if you’d put the max speed with that motor, and more importantly, the range with that battery when making the next video... Thanks! Cheers :)

you know theres a thing the ancient ones called a lead acid battery. they deliver more ah. i myself dont really agree with lithium as every batteries that i had that were lithium either caught fire, exploded or just failed entirely. lead acid or slas may be old but you dont have to take time putting cells together and all you gottah do is wire them up. they can deliver more amps than lithium (unless you have abunch of lithium cells.) and are just safer and more predictable. so people who are watching this i would recommend using lead acids for your build. you may even catch a higher top speed with the increased amps.(edit) forgot to mention theyre the same price and sometimes even cheaper then the hoverboard batteries shown in the video!!

How fast will it go ? 2. I’m about 300lbs would it work with my size ? 3. How long would it run on a charge .4. Can you accelerate and decelerate or is it just off and on ? I got basically the same motor and controller kit for $139 CDN and a 36V 20ah lion battery wit charger for about $100 CDN. As warned you need some basic fabrication skills to get the "Universal" motor mount fitting correctly but nothing too crazy. I installed on my wife's old bike and it works great. This was a pretty cool project to get into an ebike on the cheap. For serious riding you probably want to spend the extra cash and go with a wheel hub or crank motor.

Biggest problem are the batteries 18650. In my country samsung's 25r, costs 14.5$ per battery, and from the internet, cannot be imported through air because "hazard", but postal services like dhl or ups through aliexpress, are just extremely expensive, 100$+. Bought a few times from ebay, here in europe where I live, shipping through dhl, never delivered. Built a pack from notebook batts, for older notebooks, nowadays notes have integrated li-po batteries like in a phone, and it's good that 18650 can be still found in unused older notebook batts. 13s4p, 52v 20amp 1kw hubmotor, can't go past 3 speed, maybe 4 on the flatground, but the range is ~20km. Can't go on one charge for 20km+, need to keep consumption low, thus use the 2nd speed most of the time. When I use the 2nd speed, the voltage drops by 2-3v, 3rd speed 3-4v, when 4th it drops by ~6v, 5th almost goes from 54-52 to 42 which is minimal, and I'm afraid to keep it at that consumption for too long. On the power alone, on flatground, keeping the speed of 20-23km/h, this pack can't carry my weight, 90kg, for more than 20mins before bms shuts it down. Welded a cable to ignore bms protection of overdrainage. Maybe it helps someone - don't get notebook batts, unless you can't find alternative. Got a few of those vruzend kit, nice thing, but after 6months of being mostly unused during winter season, multiple holders cracked, will need to replace them. Whole project cost me around 1k$ and I'm not satisfied, it was fun, but it's weak, , can't use it as a light moped on at least flatground and 1-3 degrees slopes. Wanted to post it here as an experience, but on a second read it looks like whining :D

And I've done the exact same thing for an electric ATV. I was going for 6 36v packs for 26.4ah but only 4 work so 17.6ah I got an extra heavy duty 36v controller and it's running a 24v geared motor. I don't run it for long periods but I do use it around my property pulling my wagon doing yardwork, but I've recently rebuilt a schwinn scooter and took the controller and battery and now that scooter pops wheelies and does over 20mph

Great idea, damaged by over-simplification. 1. Hoverboards mostly have 2x 350w motors (some are 2x 250w) 36v so don't really need two for a starter "250w" ebike. 2. Joining two batteries is dangerous unless both have just been charged to exactly the same voltage - say 42v 3. You need to parallel connect individual cells, not just at the 36v point. Again, don't mess with lithium batteries ! 4. Comments about the batteries very incomplete. Cheaper cells not designed for bike use only low drain -applications i.e. 2hrs+ laptop discharge. Stick with Hoverboard/scooter batteries/cells for ebike.

So, it's March now and the kit from AliExpress is STILL on its way. Ordered back in January. Took a whole month to ship due to Chinese New Year and the damn corona virus shutdown. Same with the battery. Hopefully yours will arrive soon so you can make your video on it Had to go with AliExpress - the Amazon ones don't ship to Australia and Amazon Australia don't stock it Also that battery seller does 10Ah e-scooter batteries for a similar cost of two of those smaller ones. Thinking of gradually buying 3-4 of them for parallel use as funding allows. Just buy one every so often to extend the range

Why did you use the 4.4 amp vs the batteryhookup 5.1 amp? isn't 5.1A better? Also did you make a video build and do a comparison vs expensive ebike? 250 watt is good for in city commuting on fairly flat surfaces, but not enough power to off road with really, also depends on age and health. 60 years plus with arthritis is recommended not to go below 750 watts, 500 is for healthy 60 plus older so age is a factor also in considering a ebike build.

Thanks alot for the videos, very informative, and they save us newbies from the costly mistakes of trial and error. AND what about an inexpensive idual hub set up on a single speed old bmx bike, seems there may be room for a long narrow battery pack above the top tube AND below the down tube. There are lots of old cheap solid bmx frames out there waiting for a new life.

Hi Micah, You actually talked me into making the leap. First we bought an inexpensive bike. Then we used your links and bought all the parts. We chose a 250 watt motor, etc. We had to tweak the motor mount to fit our bike. Then, it all went together. Rack over the back wheel to hold the battery pack and motor controller. It works. But after we spool up, the power shuts off. Thought maybe it was the b.m.s., so we put four battery pack in parallel. Each pack is 10s2p. No change. Tried a second controller. No change. Can you point me to a resource for troubleshooting this? Thanks for the video and keep up the great content. Dave

I might have it solved. 24v motor kit. 36v battery modules. You may want to caution noobs (like me) that multiple choices are present at most of the links and care must be exercised to get voltage matched components.
@MNDaveW
4 жыл бұрын
The correct 36v motor and controller solved most of the "cutting out" problems. It still cuts out if I accelerate hard from a stop. If I baby it up to speed it works. I ordered a 1000w 36v controller. I plan to use it to overvolt the 24v motor to see if I can bump the top end. It should be about 360w instead of the 250w it is spec'ed for along with higher rpm. Hoping I don't burn out the motor. If I do, I still have the 36v motor...
