Had a small aquaponic greenhouse system when I lived in a subdivision and the neighborhood kids loved to come over and feed the tilapia. They’d take food right out of their hands. Next thing you know, kids were building greenhouses and fish tanks up and down the street. They’re awesome, just don’t name them or else your family won’t want to eat any fish!

Great video. I raise trout and they need cold water, less than 70 degrees to grow well. I keep them completely in the shade, and during the summer I hook up a makeshift swamp cooler to keep the water under 70 degrees through evaporative cooling. Hopefully that info is useful to someone. Thanks for the video.

It’s a bit on the high end of temps for trout right now, and low end for tilapia. So we shall see.

Just a thought of the stack of water barrels, remember cumulative weight on the braces for the lower ones. Even a 2 high stack doubles the weight load

For sure. So far everything completely filled, so good. I’m actually going back to my original pallet racking plan at some point. ✌️

Good 4 u. I am originally from around where u r. Raised talapia for about 9 years in S.E Asia, still here. Also raised catfish, from my expeirence vitamin C goes a long way. Keeps them healthy. Vitamins are great and needed for preventitive care. Fish food offers only the basics. Looking forward to see how they fair, good luck.

Would it be easier to do "aquaponics" commercially if you separate them? Wondering if the combination "locks you in" to use selective fish/plants and if there is an imbalance (too much fish, not enough plants) then both systems get hurt without the separation? Also hindering any flexibility to take advantage of market prices for certain crops/fish that might get more expensive "off-season" (for most traditional farms etc). If you separate it you could use the "fish fertilizer" to hydroponically grow even plants that doesn't work well in aquaponics, and control the amounts of nutrients the plants pick up to stimulate growth?

I’m slowly learning what big system I want to set up. And it’ll be a project in the future. Too many other things on the go at the moment. 👍

From what i heard algae is goo for the tilapia if its not excessive,it helps wirh ammonia and can increase oxygen levels

What is your desired outcome of PPM? The problems with tilapia are they grow very fast thus cost for feed as they get larger becomes less efficient. The fact they reproduce like rabbits makes them invasive and dangerous to the environment. Along with unnative bacteria and alge you should stick with what's around you. Your local DNR should have info on using the same hatchery as they do. The reality is there is better alternatives you can do that won't get out of hand. The tilapia are able to handle severe conditions so the survival rate is going to surpass its container ever time. Every tilapia setup I've seen always ends up over ran and the filter can't keep up and it smells like a kpop concert.

Haha. Just experimenting and trying to get some pounds of fish protein. So far I’m liking tilapia, and will be doing a centralized large filter to accommodate a high concentration of fish. But, still learning as I go.

Small baby fish are the best. They poop the most with the least amount of food. I hope your not trying to eat the tilapia?

Are you going to experiment with using floating lettuce racks to filter the fish run off and remove the fish solid waste for compost?

Maybe. For now my idea is to water the greenhouse with fish water, and change fish with fresh water. So many cool ways to do it. ✌️

@@ArkopiaKZitem I water all my pots and gardens with fish tank water by hand.. sometimes tadpoles and baby fish end up in the water but that's just more nutrient for the plants.
