I enjoyed the warts and all approach very much indeed. 👍 That's what I do in my videos when I'm servicing and fitting parts to my Royal Enfield motorcycle. There's no point in kidding people on that the job is easier than it actually is, because when they go to do it themselves and it doesn't go like the 'slick' video they've just watched, then they end up feeling stupid.

Really enjoyed watching this Simon start to finish. Thanks for sharing this with us so completely and I give u major kudos for showing it after the mistake. Still think that pipe turned out well and has some abs beautiful grains. Glad it could be saved. That's what I wud think is a higher end shop pipe if u so choose to keep it that way. Thanks again!!

Simon, May I make one small suggestion? When you install a bit into the Jacobs Chuck, tighten all three of the keyways. That might help with your bit alignment. Otherwise, it's a great video.

Great video. Glad you included the warts. I’m not a craftsman myself, and am fascinated by the creative-and learning-processes. Billiard variants are my favorite. A stout, slightly appleish nosewarmer like that would be a great car pipe.

You spent a couple of hours using newly learnt skills to craft a pipe out of a block of briar and in the process snatching victory from the jaws of defeat...that Sir in this day and age of general malaise and navel gazing is commendable. I salute you 👍

Well done. Highly entertaining and informative. Just remember, handmade is the point. Sometimes it’s not perfect but beauty lies in the imperfection of the craft.

Would using a brad point drill bit reduce the drill wobble? Also noticed that you slide the tailstock in to start drilling instead of locking down the tailstock and feeding the bit in for the draft hole, would a lower rotation speed make a more accurate draft hole cut? More of my experience is from a metal lath and not wood. Pipe does look nice!

Saludos

I think you'd save yourself a lot of chatter if you locked down your tail stock. This is much more important with a woodturning lathe, such as you have, rather than the metal lathes a lot of pipe makers use.

Simon, from what I saw, you were trying to split your attention by filming/narrating and machining this pipe. Either task is a full-brained activity. May I suggest setting up the shots for the best view, turning the camera on, then just working as you normally do. You can add informative voice overs when you edit. Doing this a few times will condition you to having a virtual audience as you work. Once this happens, you can add real-time narration as it will come naturally. Either way, the resulting pipe was darn cool. As for the air passage, that drill is very long considering it's narrow diameter. Consider shortening that one at the back end and re-grind a chamfer on the end,, or getting a shorter one that will be more resistant to wandering. Dull cutting edges will tend to promote wandering also. Abom79 has some excellent drill re-grinding tips here on YT.

Please be safe and use an overhand grip not an underhand grip when you’re drilling you have no place to go if you use the underhand grip and you’re gonna go ahead and damage your thumb and that’s no fun at all , Thank you.

Edison also had a team of people working on “his” ideas, one of whom included Nikola Tesla 😂. Edison pushed for AC power, because his financial backer(Westinghouse) wanted to monetize the new electrical grid. Tesla advocated for DC, which would not have been as efficient in terms of costly transmission lines, but would deliver more power albeit at shorter distances from a generating station. Sadly, Edison gets much credit beyond his own merit, and many of the silent people behind the scenes never received and recognition for the work they did with his name on it.
