best observation hive design ive seen !!!!! so awesome. If I build my own, I will model it after this one.

Thanks! It has its pluses and minuses. Because it's kind of small it fills up pretty fast so you have to move bees to another hive. I hung this one from chains but it needs to have a stable base or else maintenance is difficult. It would be a good hive to take someplace to show the bees, like a school perhaps.

Love this. Did you keep the hive? Do you take on custom work? I have an idea for a Honeybee Observatory in Reno and would love to pick your brain some time.

Glad you liked it. I don’t presently do custom work sorry. This was educational, both in watching the bees and with the things I learned about my hive. For instance, it filled up fast because it’s small. That meant a lot of maintenance. Also the bees seemed to be more aggressive than our other bees even though they came from the same stock. Also bees like it to be dark, and perhaps that is why they were aggressive. They were in the shade to keep them from over heating. If I were to do it again I would try connecting a dark space to the viewing space. Not sure what the outcome would be but I’m sure I would learn something new. Thanks for watching!

You, Sir, are a craftsman! I did a random search for honey bee observation hives and our video showed up in the feed. Are you happy with those chains as hanging support for that in the end? What's your guess regarding the overall finished weight load when they are in full honey production? Thank you for sharing, I completely understand the time that is lost to honey bee observation :) I wish you all the best!

Because it is hanging, when you open the door the hive tips. A solid mount from above or below would fix that. Also because of the small size of the hive it would fill up pretty fast and some of the bees and frames would have to be moved to another hive. All in all a pretty neat experience though. Thanks for watching!

Fred, or author. I thought observation hives needed a cover to prevent light into the hive at times. Would it be ok to leave this open and observable all the time? How would nighttime light from the home effect the hive?
@OpenWoodShop
2 жыл бұрын
@@sakimbler The hive was under the eve of the roof and next to a bush so there was no direct sunlight, which would have made it too hot. All I can say is that the hive thrived. It was however smaller than a regular hive and populated a little to fast and had to be split several times during the summer that I used it.

Wow! What a beautiful hive! I’m curious for an update and would love to see an “update” video. Also curious how they were fed (under the roof? through the PVC hole?). Thanks!

I learned several things from that project. First is that having it on a solid mount instead of hanging it would have made maintenance MUCH easier. I had it hanging so that it would be out of the way from people, but still be visible from inside the house. But any work on it would cause it to be constantly moving. I only had it up for the summer, so there was no feeding, just like a regular hive. The top came off and there was a screen top underneath it so I could have done some kind of feeding from there if needed be. It was only a 6 frame hive so it filled up with bees quickly and there was no way to expand. It was a really fun project and I still have the hive, but I probably won't be doing it again anytime soon. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words.

That’s great to know about the screen top and the mounting. It looks like it was a really cool project. I guess you could always “split” the hive if needed…or add a second hive next to it with PVC connecting the two (sort of like if they were contained in a short wall and only could move sideways). But that seems like a lot of work. 😂 Thank you for sharing these lessons learned and your video!

Do you have building plans for this observation hive?
@OpenWoodShop
3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, no. Since these are one off projects I am always experimenting so I don't want to put out plans unless the project is fully tested. The thing I learned about this project was that the frames were too close to everything else. The tolerances were good for a standard Langstroth hive but it was difficult to take the frames out for maintenance. The frames on a regular hive are accessed through the top but on this hive it was from the side. Not a big problem if the hive is firmly attached to a stand but very tippy when hanging from chains. Even the tight tolerances would probably be ok if it had a stand instead of hanging. Thanks for asking.

@@OpenWoodShop I appreciate the response. I am currently building one with a system of five 2-frame boxes. Each box will be independently removable for hive maintenance, if needed. It’s a weekend (or when I have time) project for my me and my son. So it may be a month or so before it’s finished.

Sorry I can't. If you find someone who can do it for you there are several things that I would change. 1. I would make it bigger. The hive fills up very fast otherwise. 2. Don't hang it. Having it move while you are doing maintenance is difficult and makes the bees angry. Also make sure it is not on direct sunlight.
