The reinheitsgebot law only applies to bottom fermented beer. However pork in beer. Really? American C Hops popular with homebrewers but rarely found in pub beer here in England.
@jeanrepal
6 жыл бұрын
i don't know where you got that, but it's false. The Reinheitsgebot originated in a time where they didn't know what yeast was or did. That's why it's not mentioned in the Reinheitsgebot und also why applied to both bottom and top fermentation. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to get a traditional Kölsch brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot.

@AudioEtcDotBlogspot
8 жыл бұрын
+Diggnuts Yeah he totally misrepresents the german purity laws, which actually helped to improve the quality of beer throughout europe. He makes out that he's doing something really creative, but its harder to find beer that meets the purity laws (shoutout West) than it is to find those that don't in europe.
@Diggnuts
8 жыл бұрын
bass5445 That is true, but following it or having to follow are two different things! What has chanced surrounding the Reinheitsgebot mostly is interpretation. There was no firm concept/knowledge of yeast and how or why fermenting worked in 1516. Also, the only thing the Reinheitsgebot actually did was that it forbade any brew that did not follow it to be sold/marketed as beer. On top of that, a lot of beers that are brewed in the "tradition" of the Reinheitsgebot are actually not following it perfectly like Weizen beers because the Gebot does not allow for wheat to be used in the wort, only barley.
@Diggnuts
8 жыл бұрын
AudioEtcDotBlogspot To be fair, the Reinheitsgebot at the time did reek havoc on a lot of German beer culture that did not survive. Things like krieks, wheat beers, herbal recipes and anything that used additions before or during various processes that existed in Germany as well as in Belgium, France and to a lesser extent in the Netherlands were lost in Germany. You are right that they also gained a lot. The mastery of German brewers to actually pull out flavors with the process is remarkable. Brewing in the tradition of the reinheitsgebot really should mean to understand the process in such fine detail that you can create a flavour profile without additions, regardless if you are planning on adding anything foreign. This is a skill that these chaps ar dogfishhead do not master... at all.
@bass5445
8 жыл бұрын
Diggnuts Yeah as far as I'm aware they added to it, allowing wheat and such for specific beers, such as the Weizen. But yeah, it's a great thing. I don't want bullshit additives in my beer and all that stuff

The Reinheitsgebot is a milestone in world history and made beer what it is today for a lot of reasons but it just not translating in today's times. Because of it the beer makers in Germany has reduced their competition to price and image. There is very little difference in taste and variety, the only deciding point is the lower price and if that particular brand speaks to people from a certain region. What this has done is drive beer quality to a stable but also taste and variety. Basically it's all the same crap that has good enough quality and recipe for a mass product but nothing else going on for it. People aren't willing to pay more for beer, everybody is just looking at the price point. This means there is very little space for small breweries. No place for experiments, no chance of a bigger, more complex experiment and development of different things. Ironically Americans, the people with the shittiest beer of all times have now taken the lead.
@copsarebastards
5 жыл бұрын
Do you have any sources for this or is this just your impression? My gf is german and i am a homebrewer, I have a bit of a dream of moving there and brewing American style craft beer professionally, because the craft market is smaller there with more room to grow, but competing with german domestics is a whole different ballgame vs american domestics. Also the reinheitsgebot killed local styles and old gruits and stuff which isn't necessarily great.
