I've wanted to make a Ceriops Tagal dye vat for over a year. It's a unique process, unlike any other natural dye. The closest comparison I have to the process is making an indigo vat or making kakishibu. But really, it's not at all the same-just very process-oriented.
In this video, I follow the step-by-step instructions provided by Botanical Colors and Threads Of Life. I've included links below for purchasing Ceriops Extract and the how-to page if you would like to join me in making a dye vat. Or maybe, like me, you bought the extract, and it's been sitting in a bin waiting to be used for a very long time. I also included a link to Botanical Colors Feed Back Friday, which features Threads Of Life. This is how I found out about this natural dye back in 2021.
I started this vat on Monday, July 1, 2024. Editing and uploading the video took a little while. The vat will be matured and ready for use on Thursday, August 1, 2024. I'm planning on recording a second video documenting the dyeing process on the first weekend of August. Fingers crossed, life in general cooperates. We are in fire season, and we haven't had any major fires recently, but one never knows.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if you plan on making a Ceriops vat. If you've already made a vat, I would love to know about your experience and if you have any tips or tricks.
A little bit about Ceriops Tagal, also known as Indian mangrove. It's prized for its tannin-rich bark. Ceriops is considered precious, and the dyestuff is not normally thrown away after a single dye session. First, it's mixed and allowed to age/cure for a month. Then, it's reboiled and strained for dyeing. After dyeing, the dye liquid is returned to the Ceriops vat and saved to be used again and again until the dye bath is depleted. It is through multiple dips that the distinctive rich brown color is developed on textiles.
