This method can be used for wood portals as well. I wouldn't try etching the boards because the etching would be too deep, but thin wood stock which can be purchased at Hobbytown USA and other stores can be glued to the foam core. A yellow weathering powder can be used as a base color highlighted by browns and greys. Be sure to use a water based glue.

I love your idea about using the powder...but I can only find it for ~$10+ an ounce + s/h How far does it go? If I have a large area I'm wanting to cover, I'm not sure it'll be possible at that expense. Any other ideas?

The powder I used would make over 100 of these portals. $7 for a one ounce square jar (the kind I use) is the proper price. For more savings, buy sets of 4 to 8 jars. Try online N Scale Supply or Hobbylinc.com
