Perfect straight to the point knife. At this stage in the knife hobby for me a bad handle ruins a knife with even a good blade. Perfect finger groove. Wish more people got it right.

But the blade itself is bad. The author does not understand anything about the distribution of carbide grains in steel. Without forging the blade area (redistribution and reduction of grain size) this knife - is garbage.

I have a genuine question: Files are usually really hard. Why did he put the knife and fire and oil ? Isn't that the hardening process ? But why do it on a already hardened file ?
@P226nut
Ай бұрын
He annealed it before he started, it makes them soft again. You can see this at the start when he’s pulling out of some sort of ashes, you heat up the file to full hardening temp cherry red or so and then place it in ashes or lime so it cools very slowly.

hi. can some1 tell me why it needed to be in the fire? (new to this and wanting to learn)
@P226nut
Ай бұрын
He started out by annealing the file to make it soft for working on, you can tell this because he’s pulling it out of ashes or lime at the start of this and when you anneal you heat the blade up to it’s critical temperature and then bury it in ashes or lime and let it cool all the way down over night usually, this process makes it soft, then he heated back up and oil quenched it to restore its hardness, which he confirmed by running a file on the blade and it was just skating off instead of biting in and filing.

@P226nut

3/8” is too thick imo, 1/4” is crazy thick and makes knives really heavy. Also files are only as thick as files are usually 1/8” to 3/16” at the biggest

Do files make good knives? Ive got some really old files, rasps, axe heads, wrenches. Would these old stees be good to use? Ive also got some large springs, 13" long, 3.5" diameter, pretty sure 5/8th inch diameter extruded steel. Theres some numbers on them also alot of chain. Stuff i got out the trash. Worked for a place that made equipment that fixed railway tracks.
