I make exactly the same fire starters using sawdust (I have a wood shop). I make them by the hundreds as long as I can get free wax. Making syrup doesn't have to be complicated and it's a great way to spend time outdoors and get a bit of exercise. I used to use the old fashioned metal spiles and open buckets but rain and snow were always a problem. I think that if I were doing it now I'd invest in some of those kits.

Tip for next year if you decide to upsize your system. Trees the size you have can easily have 3 taps (spiles) in each tree. @CaptainKleeman made an awesome fire pit. The chimney worked very well. If you had any more concrete blocks I’d go one row higher. Maple trees produce the most sap if you get about a 10*C fluctuation in temperature below freezing at night and above in the day. Once the temperature stays fairly consistent above freezing your sap turns bitter

Looks like you did pretty good on your first time making maple syrup, I used to do the same thing back in the day, all is good , as long as it’s to your taste, when it’s good for , it’s done. So great job, love your channel, my wife will also luv your channel, just having fun with what you do, is the best, oh say hello to Mike for , like his channel too, lol, May you and your Family have a blessed day🤗🤗☀️☀️☀️☀️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

So that is how it is made !!!! Fancy leaving a firefighter in charge of lighting a fire.... 🤣 we are only supposed to extinguish them 🤔 Surprised how cheap the kit was, can you tap the sap year round or is it seasonal ? We can buy maple syrup over here 🇬🇧, most of it is Canadian we pay about £4.00 ($5.06) for 250ml (8.5 fl.oz).

You can put a few taps in the tree depending on the size. Then the tubing can be put together to make harnesses and the trees can be attached together using the tubing and gravity. Finally the sap can be emptied into a bigger basin and collected in one spot. Also if you get a maple thermometer and calibrate it every day then you will get the perfect maple consistency every time!

Great job on the syrup. I’m a backyard syrup maker myself. I started with the same setup as your using. During the summer I found a 250 gal oil take to make my evaporator. (That would be a good project for Mikes channel.). I bought a 2x4 flat pan with a float box from smoky lake. The main thing is to size your equipment to the number of taps you plan on having. Can’t wait to see next years video. 👍🏻

Well Done. We tried that when I was a kid. However, we didn't have any hard maple trees and silver maples didn't do as well. There is a very success full sugar mill just north of us near Bloomington, IL called Funks Grove. They have a web and store. Threeeesss to Ya

Love the channel and so happy to see you doing things that connect directly with the land. By learning the old ways, you stay grounded and create a tremendous foundation for your family. You two are almost still kids but soon enough, your children will tell their children how things done the old way was/is healthier and more safe. Keep learning and trying new (in this case old) stuff. Not sure if there is an update on the heigelkulture (sp) gardens.

I made my own syrup as well and it's kind of a trade-off either it's thinner but you get more volume or thicker and have a rich flavor but less volume, either way, it was fun and very delicious.

As the sap concentrates the boiling temperature increases. There are tables to tell you at what temperature it becomes syrup that can be checked with a simple candy thermometer. Takes a lot of the guesswork out.

Straining it doesn't change the color. It's the sap itself. Different conditions produce different colors/flavors (warmer is darker, I like it better). Also, use egg whites on final cook to catch small debris. I immediately thought it looks like you're on the Mississippi bluffs in MO. A local, eh?

Hey! I got to meet Mike last summer and help him out with the sawmill a little bit but left before I got a chance to meet you. Anyway, we made an attempt to do syrup this year so it's cool to see you guys tried it too. I liked the little brick setup you guys did, it seemed to work really well. I'm ashamed to say, I hadn't checked out your channel until Jason mentioned to me that you and Mike did some syrup too. I'm subscribed and notifications on now! haha Good luck next year if you decide to go bigger, it can be very addicting!

I know nothing about this. I assume the holes are plugged after the spiles are removed?
