Years ago I chose 5 meals to teach my sons to make. I made a little homemade cookbook and they made them until they had successfully fixed supper by themselves whenever needed, choosing from those 5 meals. They are adults now, but the other day, for some reason my cookbook was mentioned. I had forgotten all about it. It is long gone now, but the meals remain in their heads and they often prepare them even now.

When my husband and I got married my Bridal Shower was a "Fill Our Pantry" shower, so people brought canned goods, cleaning supplies, and similar items and I asked that instead of a traditional card that people bring a recipe! Most of the things I cook I do get the recipe for online, but we have some absolute favorite meals from those recipes that I got at my bridal shower.

Both of my sons learned to cook, as I was a single mother for a long time. My oldest would start dinner before I got home from work. He would often call me when he was in college and say “Ok Mom, I have this, this and this in my cupboard and fridge. What can I make for dinner?” Before long, we were holding “classes” for some of his friends. Fifteen years later, I still hear how grateful these kids were, and now they’re teaching their own kids to cook!

I totally agree with you! This is probably in my top 5 videos that Mindy has made. We had to take Home Ec and Free Enterprise in school. Cooking and sewing etc in home ec but the FES class taught a lot of budgeting! We had to take $20 and get groceries and couldn’t be a penny over. It was such a learning process and really showed how our parent(s) had to make ends meet. My mother was a single mom raising 4 kids and it was truly eye opening and made me appreciate her so much more!

my son had a home ec class in 7th grade, they learned how to cook, sew, babysit, and budget. (only 1 semester long) He really enjoyed it. I taught him a lot of that stuff at home before hand, he is the oldest and had a lot of experience babysitting and cooking, I am a seamstress. So it was something he felt comfortable doing. In the long run, that helped him pull all his other grades up as well.

Both can now cook for their families do laundry and keep a clean house. I started cooking at 9 dinner was my responsibility and so was cleaning the house. It was rough at 9 to make sure the house was clean and dinner on the table when my dad got home, only then was I allowed to do any homework, but I learned a lot by doing those things and passed them on to my kids and I cook with my grandkids any chance I get they love it but so does grandma.

I love this. It’s such a good way to teach the kids & get them involved! I am a millennial (32) & expecting my first child. No one taught me how to cook. One of my grandmothers didn’t cook at all, the other only cooked on occasion & made a lot of easy / convenient foods. My mother also was not an amazing cook & did not cook very often. Now I am an adult navigating cooking for myself. I struggle with both figuring out what to make & with time! I think cooking is an important skill that deserves to be passed on. Hence why I am drawn to a lot of these videos! I had to seek sources outside of my home to get the skills I desire.

Same here! HelloFresh (and other food boxes) were a god send for me when I was trying to get more into cooking at home about 6 years ago. My biggest problem was that I just didn't know where to start. Their recipes were just so much more dependable than the ones I found online (because I didn't know how to tweak things to my tastes yet). It also helped me get out of my comfort zone and try meals and veggies I wouldn't have thought to buy for myself. I supervise college students in my job, and I recommend the boxes to them all the time because it really is an easy way to get into things.

I give them coupons and sales ad and have them figure best deal and food that we grew on that deal. They use math skills which is important. When cooking together good time to talk or my kids would practice there spelling words. My daughter now is a awesome cook. I also had each one every week choose one meal maybe something they want to learn we cook it. I have 21 year old son who still will look up a recipe and study it get his supplies and talk to me with any questions and make it. So I love they still want to explore more things in the kitchen. I love this video. I kept my kids in the kitchen from a very early age. My son used to slip up between my arms while I was whisking or chopping to pitch in. 😁❤️

I have 3 children whom are all adults now 🥹(19, 24, 26). They all spent a lot of time in the kitchen with me when they were younger. Every night (when time allowed) I had a kitchen helper and I used this time to teach them. My daughter in law grew up eating out or getting take out almost nightly and loves that my son knows how to and loves to cook. My daughter doesn’t necessarily love to cook but is very good at it and at looking in the fridge and coming up with new ways to use items up. My youngest is also very capable and likes to help. He recently starting working at a grocery store and was quickly moved into the bakery when they realized he knew how to bake bread and frost cakes. It makes my Mom heart proud to know that these are skills I taught them.

Our library sells or gives away magazines and books too. Good way to have cookbooks to keep. I also garner recipes from store coupon books. Sometimes the deals are pretty good if you watch when the coupon item is on sale.

I think you've been upstaged by your kids! They are adorable! This video is exactly how my mom taught me and for me also my own kids. The recipes may have changed, but not the simplicity. Plus I found a new recipe-Pizza Quesadilla. Thanks 😃

Now that it is summer and farmers markets will be open if not already open I would suggest going and buying what you can to store. You can freeze a lot of veggies if you do not home can or dehydrate. Buying in season and storing in any way that you can will help this winter.

A chicken stir fry would be an easy starter meal for somebody that's just starting off cooking you can buy mixed vegetable medleys that are frozen at your grocery store cut up a chicken breast or two and boom cook it all together maybe a little sauce on it or something whatever your heart desires and you got a meal

I love, love your videos - I hope you will consider making a series on college cooking. My son has three years left of high school and I would like to start putting together a recipe book for budget friendly meals for kids who may have limited cooking tools like a stove, etc. Maybe only a microwave or electric teapot. thank you!

I’m 62 and just retired. I grew up on a farm so I wasn’t raised eating out and did not pick up that habit. I was a single mom for 20 years so I was frugal to save for my kids college education. My youngest son loves to cook also.

Great video as always Mindy. Here is a chefy tip for u. Peppers should always be sliced skin down. Doing it the other way can actually dull ur knife. If u cut the top and bottom off and then slice down one of the ribs u can lay it on its side cut all the ribs and pull out the seed portion all in one piece.

Loved watching you guide your kids. It inspired me to be creative. I've been on a mission to not waste food, eat what I've got before it goes bad. It was so sweet how your daughter heard your son wanted to pour the eggs, so she only did half so he could pour also. You're doing a great job Mom.

As someone who grew up in poverty and whose both parental figures worked two jobs, I think you're spot on abt convenience foods. It's hard to have perspective with them so expensive right now, but I'm sure it was appealing spend 25 cents on a can of green beans, 75 cents on a box of Hamburger Helper, and $1.50 on a pound of ground beef in 1990 and be able to comfortably feed a family on $2.50. I can cook from scratch only because I learned it through cooking shows on public television like reruns of Julia Child and Cook's Country / America's Test Kitchen, and in this time of hyperinflation it's saved my family so much.
