This is a trilogy because I made all the videos within the space of four days. One thing led to another. I know which is last but I am not sure which is first or second. They were filmed concurrently. They follow quickly after Celebrating. Had I known I were going to make three more videos, this would have been a quartet.
Those of you who are following the walkingwithzinnia videos are well familiar with Obradoiro. It is the large plaza in front of the Cathedral. It is the end point of all the Caminos de Santiago.
I started with HUGS because as I had noted in Celebrating I should have videod people hugging each other. While I was doing that I noticed that people were arriving or leaving the square in large groups. Groups were usually easy to identify because they often wore matching T-shirts.
I actually videod one group as it was going to the square. I noticed the chant leader, who I called Trotsky, maybe he felt charismatic. You will see and hear him shout, “Viva Christo”, “Santa Maria de Alcor”, “Viva Santiago”, “Viva España”. Later when his group was hugging, I focused on Trotsky.
In the HUGS video you will hear people saying in Spanish, “We arrived” or “We made it”. In the last clip they are congratulating the couple on their engagement.
While I was doing all of this, I started taking pictures of people taking pictures of themselves, or groups, or posing for pictures showing off or triumphant. I went back into my files from 2022 and 23. I am sure people were doing the same things then but I took very few pictures of that type. Each year, something else catches my attention.
The song “Memories are Made of This” kept running through my head. I listened to Johnny Cash, Dean Martin, Paul Anna, the Eberly Brothers and then there was Little Richard. His wild version blew me away. At first I let it play throughout but it felt too aggressive so I made a voice over recording which is more in keeping with the photographs.
I wonder what will feel new to me next year as the pilgrims or tourists arrive in the square.
