I suggest u, dont choose animal or other that have background with belief. example, dog in islam. beef in hindu, vegetarian, wild boar in papua and so on. Better u start from fiction character. it can be name, story, creature. the reason is your game can reach more user.

A database solves a lot of issues regarding saving and loading, if you consider a "world" table which stores ids to other tables like "character" for example. If you have a layout of all the tables you need, to represent the world, you could just save every value change in the database, happening in the current moment. Therefore there would be no need to have a dedicated save button anymore and the load to save the entire world is also reduced, which will definitely be a problem if the game expands. The same you can do for the character. For a fast database you could use an open source JSON based database, because with it you might also have the import and export format for the character already in place, while with SQL you might be forced to define a file format yourself.

I am glad you mentioned save and load systems being challenging and essentially requiring you to build and implement features around it. How you deconstruct and reconstruct gameplay systems with actors and objects to rudimentary variables that can be easily written to disk, then things like multithreading autosave features so the game wont stutter when autosaving. All these things we all take for granted when playing a game are so complex.

This is so interesting and amazing to see! Congratulations on achieving this by yourself! Also something i think you could consider for immersion terms is to add the same amount of personality to animals as you are thinking for the villagers. For example, if a hog "hears" you chopping wood then it will get scared and flee however if a more aggresive mob "hears" the same action it might acttack. This just so all the actions you make have a consequence either good or bad like irl.

you can also fix the problem of having to go back to the wood cutting station by having a perk like "wood cutter" that you can spend points in which would make the minigame easier (make the pink bar bigger) so you can get higher multiplier more easily and get wood faster, while keeping early game the same.

One thing I always wanted most game with building feature is to have a blueprint feature. So I can plan a build before putting on the material, and another feature to copy previously built things to be able duplicate it if I want. If you can do that, that would be so good.

All this amazing work and the thing that made me most excited was the way tree chopping looks. It starts slowly falling before you're all the way through and you can see the progress by how much material is missing from the trunk. Despite the cartoony/stylized graphics I think it looks amazing and better than 99% of games that involve cutting down trees, including Valheim. Honestly you should do a tutorial showing how you did that! Great job!!!!

For woodcutting you should make it where there's a perfect shot range to what you have and as you hit the perfect shot it increases how much wood gets chopped at once. So each time you get a perfect shot and no miss it increases how many logs are chopped in one chop. IE: 1. Perfect chop = now chopping 2 logs per chop 2. Regular hit = Still 2 logs per chop 3. Perfect chop = now chopping 3 logs per chop 4. Missed = Now back to chopping 1 log per chop 5. Etc.
@TeLLeK
Жыл бұрын
Something else that would make it more fun is if all the logs fall down and collect around your feet making a pile of logs (within reason of course) then when you leave the minigame they all get sucked up into your inventory.

Idea for the woodcutting workstation, make it so your character gets faster at it over time. At first it might take you ages because you're weak, but as you become stronger you chop it much faster, let's say 3x faster. 2 birds 1 stone.

Forward rendering can have as many dynamic lights as you want, IF you have tiled light culling (ie. Forward+). Without Forward+ it's a no-go. Some other things like MSAA and transparency are really easy with forward rendering as well. Besides that, I would almost always recommend deferred

Glad to see another vid. Youve made a lot of progress and hope to see more. Also, I know you scrapped the tutorial videos, but it would be cool if you had time to sprinkle some here in there. A video that would be good to watch and see how you do is load/save all the data. I've been messing with it myself and use a Primary Data Asset which saves the datas progression when loading new levels.
@LogicLeoyt
Жыл бұрын
Yea, definitely! I was originally going to use the auto save plugin, but I just thought the default UE4 save and load a bit easier to control/understand how it works lol. I basically just integrated my systems to take that into consideration when loading in. also, another really big helper is the LSS (loading screen system) plugin, because it uses level streaming . So for example, I load the save on main menu(when player chooses the world and character) and I keep that saved on the game mode, which will still have the active refs on ingame. Then when the game starts I just check the game mode for loaded data.
@LogicLeoyt
Жыл бұрын
also I don't use one big struct for the save data, I just make the variables on the save data object class itself. and i also have one for the world and one separate for the player. Also, in order to save them differently, I just add the text "world_" or "player_" before the save name (which is the name the player feeds into the input). Then I just made a function library function that will go through all saves and only return if its on world or player (using that starting text)
@somarjaber1275

Wow, your game Is very beautiful
@JasonWelch
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, saving and loading can be complicated. I mostly did backend server dev in Go for around 6 years which I felt gave me a lot of applicable experience in this area, but even so, I rewrote my save system at least 4x before I was satisfied with it. I wound up using something like the strategy pattern for mine in the end.

This is not my type of game but you've done such a good job to the point where your game brang back some good memories of cats vs pigs, spyro and some other games. You're on the right track. I don't know if you intend on doing just survival with a bit of story. But I would love to see you turn this into a story based game more then survival. But don't take my advice You're doing great already
