Also, you need to wait for 28days for the concrete to cure to about 99%. Accelerating the cure in the oven makes for a weaker concrete because you need the water to be available to the cement for hydration so you get a strong mix which would make for a more durable fire brick I would suggest.

..i believe you are right about the water being wicked away. there was one feller, he put plastic around the form and packed the cement down with a tamping tool...

I have used refactory cement before and i would have put some reo in it like steel wool cut up in very small bits and maybe even added some plaster of paris

Next set of bricks you make add perlite, sand and clay. Perlite helps reflect more heat back into the forge, the sand and clay will make the brick itself stronger.

Use to do alot of forming for concrete when I was younger. We used diesel fuel to spray the forms. It's oily and will soak into the wood so the wood won't absorb the water. It also helps the concrete not stick.

They use a different compound now. It smells worse than diesel but not as strong, less fumes, and it's sticky. I used to do tilt-up.

Not a concrete guy, so any constructive criticism is welcomed, but would it be a good idea to line the inside of the form with silicone? Maybe trim a silicone baking sheet to line the form with? My logic is that it would prevent wicking the moisture, plus a natural non-stick bonus..

use Rotella motor oil on your frame next time, and vibrate the frame to get the cement to settle. whack it with a hammer around the sides several dozen times should do a treat.

Interesting project even though I get pumice bricks for a good price. My rocket stove with pine proved that pumice bricks from Mexico are hydraulically-pressed and free of binders. Not a single part of these bricks crumbled like a cookie or deteriorated by extreme heat.

whenever you poor concrete or cement into forms make sure you coat the boards with oil, this way the cement does not stick to the form and does not chip the cement.

Hi, Interesting channel young man. One way to reduce the water content but gain workability might be to use a super plasticizer for concrete in your cement mix? a PCE or Poly Carboxylic Ether is also a water reducing agent in concrete. It comes in liquid and powder form. What other materials are in the mix or does it come mixed in the bag?
@craigmurrayauthor

that mix was painfully too dry. It's crumbling because it was vaguely moistened powder. don't add various chemicals/agents etc unless approved by the manufacturer

I'll be making my own firebricks. I was thinking of pouring it straight into the wood stove. Should I make releif joints like sidewalks? Should I reinforce it with mesh?

so, did you mix sand and perlite or vermiculite with the cement? if so, what was your mix ratio?
@thewarriorpig3151

You have to pack the concrete, if you have a drier mix. Typically, corners are harder to pack and it creates "voids" or air pockets, which is what happened. As far as corners, we used caulk to seal the joints, preventing the water in the concrete from leaching out. This too, will cause dry, crumbly, corners. Test cylinders for concrete (to determine compressive strength) are placed in tubs of water to cure for 30 days. Completely submerged concrete, after it has "cured" for 24 hours, is actually stronger than air cured.

Too keep it from drying out the cement next time soak the wood form before oiling and forming the bricks or use PVC boards.

Wow if people only knew here that refractory cement and the cement you pour for your house or gen construction is quite different from one to the other. Chemically and physically.

Can we use just water and sodium silicate to make fire bricks
@luciusirving5926

Sure, and sodium silicate with pumice, perlite, bentonite (less dense than real clay) or vermiculite could withstand copper melting temperatures.

I have seen a lot of guys mix little bit of cement with perlite, vermiculite and sand. I recommend sodium silicate over Portland cement, the true fire cement for your money.

Use a bit more water Also just make bricks a bit bigger and trim to size afterwards. A bit more compaction also helps.
