They built the plug sanded faired and gel coated it, polished and waxed it and then gel coated for the mould, laid up fiberglass, reinforced it and popped the mold off the plug voila a mold...

One should ALWAYS spray the gel-coat on. You will never get a good sound finish with a paint brush.

But wouldn't it be exactly the same result given then it goes against the mold, which was sprayed and sanded alread? As I see it, anyway you put the gelcoat, it will be smooth if the mold is done properly.

Honestly I've been thinking about that. Electric cars using wheel hub motors are becoming much simpler than previous cars. You loose a lot of complex moving parts and can use more off the shelf parts. I'd love to build a 6x6 electric RV with solar panels all over (they are so cheap now) as a truly mobile tiny house. You could probably charge 15 km free driving each day from solar. Luckily, regulations and patents keep me from doing such foolish things :D

That's not foolish at all. It'll probably last the rest of your life.. Thousands less, of moving parts, means thousands times less parts to wear out..

Maintenance is definitely going to be less on electric vehicles. You can even repair electric motors relatively easily. Except batteries but they are going to get lots cheaper every time you need to replace them. I'd love to do it but it's basically impossible to get a custom build car registered in Europe. I'm looking into building a tiny house now. Maybe a tiny houseboat that can be on a trailer or swim? A solar powered houseboat??? But kidding aside that one actually works rather well since you don't need much to make a boat move.

A Houseboat is a beautiful thing.. Find some old empty barrels, fill them with spray foam and they'll be unsinkable and last for ever. I had a 25 foot sailboat for a while, it slept 5 people.. 2 small solar panels powered the whole boat, with one large deep cycle battery.. I never had to think about it.. It just worked for years, with not one problem. It was a fabulous time..

@@davidupton9354 🤣 no favours then hey. Seriously though I want to make a large cruiser boat. . It's the fibreglass bit that puts me off. As I ain't that good at it, the stuff goes off too quickly for me to work with it. I'll get round to it one day 👍

@@YZFR1mart If it goes off too quickly, back off on the amount of catalyst you are using. The temp of the resin and just the temp in general can affect your cure time also. Use small batches until you get more comfortable with it. But still, that stuff wasn't cheep years ago when I was in that type work.

@@davidupton9354 thanks for the tip. I live in the UK so temps are mostly low. Next time I do some on my boat I'll halve the catalyst 👍
