I usually start onions from seed early in the spring, but because of the cooler temps at that time of year I find they can be prone to damping off and be difficult to get going in general. I've grown onion sets in the past and been pleased with the results, but not usually the varieties available. Usually they are not good storage varieties, but just big or sweet varieties. Sometimes you just want the varieties you like in a set form so you can easily get them going in the spring, and here's how to do it easily in bulk.
For those who don't have a hoop house, I would guess you can start them in containers or flats and sow them densely in the spring. Once they are big enough for sets, bring them inside and stop watering them so they dry down. The issue with planting them in the late season is that they might not bulb up because of day length. You could also probably just plant them densely directly in the ground and then when they get big enough for sets, dig them up and cure them.
