Nice video. I always enjoy the classical music. It's kind of difficult to control the volume of it well because it actually uses a range of loud and soft sounds. If it's too low you won't even hear the soft parts. That's my favorite part about classical though. What do they call it pianissimo to fortissimo and a whole bunch of others in-between?

@PoorMansChemist In my mind thallium>osmium... and cheaper. And at least thallium can do oxythallation dethallation

Are you sure its a hydrogen iodide and not iodate? The elemental iodine forms from KI when you add it to a solution of HCl and some oxidizer, which is the osmium +8. or just chlorine itself making KCl and I2. Excess oxidant creates higher iodine oxide states. Try refluxing with some redP and maybe a few drops of phosphoric acid to get the iodine free from the potassium.

It IS possible that the literature is wrong. That being said, this is exactly as described in the literature, an intensely emerald green substance formed from the interaction of hydrochloric acid, osmium tetroxide, and potassium iodide. Will react with concentrated salt solutions to form iodoosmites, x3OsI6. In this case it would probably be Na3OsI6. Osmium does not form iodates.

OK how are the OsO4 vapors not wrecking you? What am I missing here? BTW did you see that JD was selling 310mg rhodium pellets for under a hundred dollars? If it was anyone but JD I'd be dubious but in 5 years he's never done me wrong. I'm going to get one and make the cyanometallate and cyanide. Would be kind of neat to see what you could do with it. Maybe play with a different PGM for a little while. Just a thought. 😁

1.) Small scale 2.) Respiratory protection 3.) Eye protection 4.) Keep a lid over any bubbling OsO4 solutions (a screwcap in this case) 5.) Work outside, not inside. 6.) Whenever possible, use OsO4 reducing materials as shielding from the vapors, of which there are many. In my last video about detecting OsO4 vapors, you can clearly see cardboard, CARDBOARD, was reducing the vapors. You can also see I'm wearing nitrile gloves in my videos-nitrile is also an OsO4 reducing material. The more OsO4 vapors you can reduce to the dioxide, the better. Also of note: OsO4 solutions, as well as solid/liquid OsO4 are capable of penetrating plastic and some other substances. The vapors however don't penetrate stuff.

I could potentially do some stuff with other PGM's. I've done a little bit with palladium and gold. But let's be honest... they're probably not as cool as osmium. The metal is so harmless, and yet doing actual chemistry with it is high risk/high reward. Maybe I'm spoiling myself with osmium? Even though I (fortunately) can't smell OsO4 through my respirator, my nerves are still on high alert, my heart beats considerably faster, and my breathing is more reserved. You almost can't beat that kind of excitement. Making the osmium rainbow with its compounds would be cool. I've still got that "purple stuff" which I cannot identify, but I know there's osmium in it and it's probably organic. Yeah, rhodium has come way down in price since covid. I've bought from JDchemist before. I bought thallium from him several years ago in fact. He's definitely trustworthy, and it's a shame he's not on ebay anymore.

@@The_OsmiumChannel "The metal is so harmless..." On the shelf that's true. Although it forms that damned tetroxide so very easily. Alkali osmates seem tame enough if you don't touch them. The cyanometallate and cyanide are also relatively tame. It doesn't have a very high affinity for cyanide ligands like it's lighter congener iron so the ligands are more labile to removal by mineral acid. It turns a lot of pretty colors as the oxidation state drops to plus two. I wish you'd try the cyanide sometime. It would be nice to have my work confirmed by a colleague. 🙂 "You almost can't beat that kind of excitement." Precisely the reason I love all these toxic metals so much. You never feel so alive as when you're holding a beaker full of death. "Yeah, rhodium has come way down in price since covid." But iridium and palladium have gone up. Meanwhile the price of rhenium doesn't seem to have moved very much last I checked. It's very weird. But still it's a golden opportunity to get an element that just a few years ago was going for about a thousand a gram on ebay. And we know JD will do us right. I'd bank my reputation on that without a second thought. He's a good guy. Not like that jackass Luciteria. "Making the osmium rainbow with its compounds would be cool. I've still got that "purple stuff" which I cannot identify, but I know there's osmium in it and it's probably organic." The cyanide? It's a deep purple and insoluble. It's also divalent if that's any help. IDK cyanide ion is generally colorless like most organics but it does seem to easily elicit very colorful compounds from many metals. Also it's doubly toxic which is an obvious bonus.
