Rob, I grew up in Pacoima in the '70's and absorbed all the culture my Mexican adopted neighbors and grandMa's (Abulela's) could share. The San Fernando Valley had a lot of really unique places and things to do, Pioneer Chicken was never good for us but it was sure fun eating it. I make Chicken Gizzards "Pioneer Chicken Style" every couple of months (along with Menudo) on some Saturday's. You have a lovely family and a terrific style! Enjoyed your lesson.

I'm a professional cook and loved your video. Like it was entertaining. I knew that was going to be raw AF but we do share the same nostalgia for Pioneer chicken. They had one here in San fransisco.... I'm gonna try to make my own. Cool video bro.

I actually stressed that he put it in the basket cold and then put it in the oil. Instead of putting the basket in the pot an then laying the chicken in it. lol

Here's a real tip for people who use peanut oil... When starting with fresh oil... Once you make the batter, put a little in a small bowl and over season it. Batter and over cook a test piece... After that then fry your chicken... The pan and grease will be seasoned and steady... And don't cook super cold chicken... It'll drop the oil temp too much... Unless you're using a deep fryer...

omg i was laughing my butt off...i grew up in Downey and pops would get off graveyard shift and wake all us kids up in the middle of the night to pioneer chicken...we would get out of bed in the middle of the night to eat pioneer... i miss it so much and have tried so many recipes...i did get it right one time but just as a mistake and couldn't figure it out again...so even if you get close keep it! I wish someone who worked there would do a video to tell us!

Try using manteca next time. Will come out much more authentic. Pioneer used lard back in the day. Different oils give different flavors. Chili powder and turmeric give you the orange grease that would run down your little forearms as you ate😉

They never used lard. I can not even eat pork and the one in Oakland when I was a child didnt use lard. I keep seeing you on every video saying that, and it is not true.

@@brainsandbeautyra you're right Pioneer always use peanut oil but I think Popeyes use to get lard bc their fried chicken taste like bacon

O knew that it was going to stick because you have to flow wet batter chicken and not drop it in the basket first. Trial and error 😅❤
