Built a home wall, built some volumes. Thinking wood holds then shaping and casting holds next. Appreciate your channel and all the tips!

Thanks! That sounds like a good timeline. Wooden holds are the way to go for starting out with home walls.

Sooooo, how do you get the real holds from foam? What mold materials are you using? Resin for final holds? Polyurethane?
@climberdad

Tin cure silicone resin (titanium cure is better). Polyurethane resin for the holds. Alumilite makes some good stuff for getting started.

😁 If it was a harder foam I would definitely use a sanding sponge.

Thanks! Shaping can be a soothing thing... and real frustrating at times too. Hmm, same thing can be said about marriage. I recommend them both :)

shaping maybe is lent from shaping surf boards perhaps

That would be a cool crossover. Are the people that shape surfboards referred to as Shapers? Thanks. For the comment.

I've used exactly the foam you use before and I found it to be too rough to be nice for a home wall. This caused the holds to eat a lot of skin and the molds to last shorter than they would with more compact foam. My advice would be to get some shaping foam (hobby stores tend to have this) or create your own with PU. For myself I've stepped over to using a 3d printer to create my holds: with some trickery they end up as strong as big-brand PE holds with a smoother, friendlier texture. It also lets me create holds specifically for my wall angle and holds that stack perfectly. I loved your stacking pentagons by the way, I hav made something similar but yours are better sized I think.

Thanks. There is some other hobby foam that you might be thinking of that is super course. I used it once back in the 90's and it was super bad. This stuff gives the exact same texture as what you would see from "name brand" holds.

@@climberdad Yeah I've used the coarser foam as well, it's even worse! But I've found for a home wall fresh commercial holds are pretty skin intensive as well. My skin isn't great to start with so for training I like textured wooden holds line Euroholds makes, or PU holds that are a little worn down. I guess I should've clarified that I was thinking of home training setups. For gym use I think floral foam is a very good alternative to shaping foam, and the rest of the process is identical to what most manufacturers do so it makes sense the outcome is more or less the same. Also, I've found you can get away with using quite a lot of filler material in most resins. Test a bunch of different mixes and it can end up saving loads of money. I like glass microballoons because of how light they end up making the holds.
