I’ve been fortunate to have lived in a lot of different towns and communities throughout my adult life. I’ve made friends with people from all walks of life, who many times have not shared my faith, worldview, or personal perspective, yet somehow we were able to get along. When it comes to “home”, don’t we all deserve to feel safe? If we are fortunate enough to own our own home, isn’t it our responsibility to keep it safe, to maintain the roof, the foundation, the doors and windows? Do we keep our doors open at night for any wanderer to come in, use our facilities, food, and furniture without our permission? Do we allow anyone to enter our home and tell us how we should live?
For those who profess to be Christian, and who wish to avail this homeland of ours without proper vetting, the argument can be made using the teaching “whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me”. Yet Christ also became angry when the temple was being destroyed and desecrated by those who showed no respect for the values that temple represented. Christ also said “love your neighbor as yourself”, because that’s a win-win. We cannot offer to anyone what we are not providing and maintaining for ourselves. Landlords have to do a background check and secure a deposit before renters can move in. Not only is this common sense, it preserves their investment and the space for the next renters.
How we care for our house and home translates to how we care for our national home. How we care for our national home translates to how we care for our entire world. To keep our homeland safe and secure is respectful to all parties involved. That is, after all, the very definition of being “civil”. In doing so we are also preserving and honoring those immigrants who came before us to escape the very criminals we are currently allowing into our home. Could we please consider - all of us - how we are treating this homeland of ours by allowing anyone to enter without proper vetting? If we cherished our nation as we cherish our own home, then one home at a time, we could - in actuality - “make the Earth glorious again”.
