Thank you so much for sharing this. It was fascinating to hear how you did it, but far too much tech involved for me. 🙃 I am about to embark on the steaming-wadding-in-layers method and will see how that works. 🤷🏼♀️😁 I so hear you about everything you have tried over the years though. 😄 XXX

Ooo excellent! Hopefully that will work well! Another option to try is the bootstrap form. It was a pretty decent option and had some customization available and a pretty accessible price. Of all the ones I've tried it was probably the best non-tech option.

@@Atheeni, would XPS foam work? It comes in greater thicknesses though. I suspect the smallest thickness might be one inch, which would require fewer layers but more finish cutting.

A couple of ideas. Do you have an estimate of how many hours you put into this project? Also, with the layers you added to the outside, how much bigger did it make the measurements? By the way, I have also been thinking about stacking layers of foam to make a form, somewhat similar to the way you did.

Hmmm it honestly didn't take all that long. I think about a day for the 3d software stuff, then maybe 3-4 days for cutting the paper templates, cutting the foam, and finishing. I didn't actually add any increase in measurements. The batting I added all around the outside was quite thin so it maybe affected the end results by adding like a half a cm. Since I'm using it for pattern drafting that's a reasonable amount for ease anyways. Definitely give this a try yourself if you're looking for a 3d form. I'm still using it and it's been great.

I’m so surprised that with all the costumes you create from stretch fabric that you don’t have a serger. Almost all of the clothes I make for myself are from knit fabric and I just love my serger.

I have some factory made garments made of stretch fabric and the serged edges are constantly falling apart. I'm not sure if zig-zag is any better but I know I don't want to use a default serger for stretch fabric edges.

Hi, you are so creative. This is the most accurate looking self made dress form I’ve seen on KZitem so far and I’ve seen a LOT! I don’t know how to use all the software you used to get your pattern but it’s a fantastic idea if you don’t want it 3d printed on hard plastic. To cover the rough parts, have you heard or used Fosshape? It’s a fabric that seems to be pretty forgiving, you sew it up a bit like you did to make your velvet cover (beautiful by the way) and then use steam or a heat gun to shrink it around the dress form. It hardens up but is completely pinable. It might be a good way to smooth out the bumps, Congrats again on a great outcome

Ooo yup I've heard of fosshape, it's awesome. I was on a really tight budget for this thing so just opted to go with cheap materials and what I had on hand but fosshape would definitely be useful.

I am curious how well the EVA foam holds up over time. My concern is after using EVA foam for so many cosplays, I would worry that continually pinning through it might break down the foam quicker than a thicker/denser foam. Definitely interested in seeing how you like this over the next few months!
@Atheeni

Mhm, I definitely see the concern, especially if I'm always pinning in the same spot. Time will tell though, I'll definitely do a follow up!

This is such a great idea! I bet it would go even faster if you had a laser cutter to cut out all of the foam. I’m curious about the other methods you mention that you tried though as they seem like much less work. What didn’t you like about the duct tape method? I was planning to try duct tape and then make a pattern from that.
@Atheeni
7 ай бұрын
Omg I am dieing to get a laser cutter. Maybe one day. I've made duct tape and also one out of paper tape and then also the sliced cardboard skeleton one that I show too. The ductape one is ok but that tape actually stretches so if you don't get a tight enough fit or your body gets warm while you're working it will heat and deform the tape a little. Plus it's really hard to get detailed curves when working with any of the tape methods. You always end up with a kind of uni-lump for the bust and butt areas. It honestly just really depends on your body shape and how detailed you need the form.

No worries, if you get a stretch light weight polyester quilt batting it will be just enough to smooth out the steps of each layer but not add too much bulk. You want to find something with a lower loft (loft is the term for fluffiness). Usually the cheaper options are better since they're made to be thinner.

looks very nice, but wont the padding and cover material add to the girth measurements, making your clothes a bit loose?
@Atheeni
3 ай бұрын
Yup, but only a few millimeters. When you draft clothing patterns you usually introduce what's called wearing ease to your clothes anyways. For wovens it's usually a positive ease to make them looser, for knits it's often negative ease to make them tighter so for the purpose of draping and pattern drafting it doesn't really matter in the end. Plus bodies change size with time of day, food, hydration, etc. so a few mm really isn't much of an impact.

So, it's a year later. How much have you used this form? How is it holding up to pinning (there were folks with concerns about the foam deteriorating)? Pros/cons now that you have experience?
@Atheeni
3 ай бұрын
It's holding up great! I use it for draping quite a bit and no issues with pins etc. only thing I would change is to make the cover out of something that isn't velvety. While the stretch velvet looks pretty it's a little too grippy if I'm using tape to transfer shapes and pulling non slippery fabrics over it is a bit annoying. Otherwise it's held up super well. I've even had it fall over a couple of times while I bumped into it. Only thing that broke was my upcycled stand for it lol. The actual form was fine.
