Looks like my P53 Enfield from Nepal will be fired for the first time in over a hundred years using homemade caps. Nobody around here has commercial ones, the prices online are astronomical, and im nearly done restoring the old gun. Thanks for the tutorial!

excellent video. I have a die maker for #11 caps but i use a different approach for my ignition compound. i carefully grind matchheads and scrape the ignition strip off the matchbox in a 5:1 match/ ignition strip ratio then soak it in alchohol so it turns to a gloop. then dab a healthy serving into the bottom of my cap. works very well. have used it to rebuild a modern primer as an experiment and worked quite well there too.

It may be easier to make a round die cutter to pop out circles from aluminum can strips, like a home made cap die punch, only for musket size, instead of the labor involved with the aluminum foil. Maybe as simple as grinding a sharp edge on a small size piece of metal conduit, or even sharpening an old 10mm or so deep well socket. May be 9mm, whatever the initial flat size needs to be. Then use the former tools you have already made here. It would make them just as fast or faster than the ready-made punches they make for the smaller #10 caps. Just a thought.

you are more talented than me I did the 1st step with an aluminum can, a 12mm cookie cutter, a 4mm pin punch, the piece of aluminum can tears, I made an entry cone but your method is more pushed with the small chuck we've all gotten to the point of doing everything ourselves Where did the stock of primer caps go? prices have increased if we find any bravo to those who propose things here to save us

Thanks for producing the video, Like you said over a year ago, they would get hard to find. I only ever had access to CCI musket caps up here and they were about as hot as a fart in a mitten. Now they are non existent and i wish i had saved the spent cases! Might have to try this out with prime-all and might even get better ignition out of it.

I do about the same! my "secret ingredient" is the primer compound from my pistol cap making kit. My Second "secret Ingredient" is used for All my cap sizes. I mix my purchased 22 or pistol cap priming compound ingredients in acetone and use a dropper to fill mixed liquid past into caps as it is much less fiddly in a wet form and acetone is recommended as a setting agent in the instructions. But You just solved some of my manufacturing problems I never thought of! I will reduce the depth of my cap die and change my mandril to wood! Thank You Sir! I am Smack in the Middle of loading my version of paper cartridges with Minie ball and a cap included for the very same riffled musket right NOW! How did I miss all this for So Long? Thanks AGAIN!

Interesting idea, for my home made revolver percussion caps I am usuing 10 toy caps, I put tape into the water, separate the paper when its wet, scrach the small black dots with the straight paper blade and put them into a cap, dry and ready to use :)

To fix the toy caps misfire issue just simply add the tiniest bit more powder to it and put some tin foil around on the inside of the cap so it doesn't fall off the cap nipple

you can use strike anywhere match`s just cut the tips off the match`s grind em up,then scrape the striker part on the box off with some sandpaper,then mix the 2 ingredients together,and use that in your caps

@briani7858

you can also do the same with regular matches. grind the compound off the heads and scrape the striker strip on the box clean and carefully mix. alcohol helps to make a slurry and they can be made pretty darn hot. easier to get a hold of than strike anywhere matches in my area, just requires a bit more work.

Love it, brother!! (I think you were shooting that poor yankee propane tank again…man, you already killed it last video, let it rest in peace!) 😂. Anyway, awesome stuff. Commercial musket caps make me cringe, i usually end up with bits of metal digging into my arm every few shots. Oh, one thing i wanted to bring up about your vids - the volume is almost always super low and actually kind of hard to hear sometimes. Just wanted to make you aware. Thanks again Ben! I always look forward to your vids.

Yes the old propane tank is going to be shot many times over the next year lol! Sorry about the sound. The plan is to up grade the sound equipment at some point. One thing you can try, turn up the volume here on KZitem as well as it would be separate from the device you are using.

Would using Prime-all compound be too potent for these caps. I used Prime-all compound for my #11 caps and thus far have never had one fail to ignite the powder, using both pyrodex, and homemade black powder. I use a 60/40 water to isopropyl alcohol mixture. After experimenting I found that's the best mix for drying time and strength in my climate. With my caps it usually burns a small hole through the thin aluminum. (From a pop can) To be honest I've never used store bought percussion caps and don't know if they do the same. Forgive my rambling. Thank you and God bless.

NICE!! Thanks for the Idea!! I use acetone or 10:1 acetone with clear nail polish for binder/solidifier. but my best ratio is about 30:1 good strong 10 or 11 caps! God Bless You!

@@HoffmanReproductions I've always been curious if Prime-All could be made at home. I can't say for sure, but it seems that the ingredients are just finely milled saltpeter, charcoal, and sulfur, although I'm unsure of the forth ingredient. It's a tan sandy substance that I assume makes the compound react to being stuck in some way. It seems it would be simple enough to use your rock tumbler mill set up to mill the ingredients separately, then combine by hand. If only we could figure out what that forth ingredient is.
@couerleroi1
Жыл бұрын
Saltpeter, sulfur and char oak make black piwder. That won't ignite on impact. Prime all uses the same ingredients as H48 which you can find online. Btw, that fourth ingredient you refer to is finely ground glass
