Forgot to mention that you may need to install the groff package if you don't already have it, you can easily obtain it for example on Ubuntu/Debian: apt install groff

3:19 You can use `Alt+.` to put the last parameter from the previous command to the current command, this will do exactly what you're doing with copy-paste with the mouse here. This is the same as `Esc`, `.`.

Back in the day, before the web and search engines really took off, man pages were essential. I still use them on occasion if I'm on a server and just want to quickly look up something. Nice video!

You can also find man pages archived on the internet. I know Gentoo and Arch keep their man pages accessible on the web.

If memory serves, Saturn was the father of Jove, who himself was I think the father of the rest of the gods and goddesses and the most powerful. He imprisoned Saturn in the pits of Hades or something like that. Saturn is the only Greek god with a day of the week named after him, but not the only one with a planet named after him. I don't remember much about the planet though

Great video. I didn't know where exactly the manual pages were located, nor that it was so easy to create one yourself. I assume that the manuel pages which come with software packages will be placed at the manpath by the package manager?
@nirlichtman
Ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes, they are placed automatically by the package manager when you install packages (they are part of the package contents)

what about amount of files in one folder? if Ill have too many files in man7? can I create subdir like man7/saturn/saturn7.gz ?
@nirlichtman
2 ай бұрын
That won't work since man won't search in that subdir, but you can add additional paths to manpath if you want to split the pages to several locations

One thing I don't get is *Why are there no examples?* in all man pages. This should have be a required standard in order for it to be considered a good manual documentation. No other sources are needed if there is examples provided. This one of the biggest grips I got with Linux. I remember back when I used to use QBasic in DOS back in the days, it typically had examples for every keyword in the help system, so when I did install Linux and didn't have internet at the time I kind felt I was shooting myself in the foot when trying to learn C in order to make games on Linux. Needless to say but I didn't get further than some simple printf() and scanf() so I gave up on Linux back to Windows with Win32 and all of that fun stuff.
@nirlichtman

Agreed, the examples are indeed very important and help get a sense of the general flow, especially felt this when learning about the OpenSSL functions, which have pretty bad man pages in my opinion
@KimTiger777

@@nirlichtmanI would say that the OpenSSL server video you made was the most useful tutorial I have come across on how to actually do it on Linux. I have tried to do it on Windows but I failed spectacularly as the entire compile process to try making a static link library blew up in my face with all kinds of errors. I just wish there could have been a single header only file, ala something like _std_image.h_ for making a socket to have SSL capabilities.
