It sure was, there was plenty of work, you could live well, rents were affordable, I had a unit in George Street, East Melbourne behind the M.C.G. Hotel (sadly that old watering hole no longer there last time I went to Melbourne), the rent was very fair, I would hate to think what is now. Left Melbourne in 1992. Since then the world has become greedier (in favour of the rich, naturally), the workforce has been casualised more and more, year by year. And the music of that era, Mental as Anything, Men at Work, Divinyls, Midnight Oil, Died Pretty. All gone!

@@terrythekittieful If you lived in E Melbourne you probably were'nt exposed to the high rates of unemployment at the start of the decade and end of the decade. My parents lost their house when my father lost his job in engineering and would only work periodically during that period through no fault of his own...easing of tariffs were demolishing old industries....again, if you're a public servant, all this reality passes you by...

@@stephenscholes4758 I was a blue collar worker back in the 80's, and it was easy to find work back then. If I left one job in Melbourne I could find a new one within a week or two and they were full time jobs. Most work back then was full time work and then there were casual and part time jobs if you wanted that. These days, the choice is limited, full time work is a luxury almost, and back in the 80's you had the CES, you would pick a job and they would call the employer to book an interview with you. Now it's these evil job providers calling the shots.

As a huge fan of 'Malcolm', I made the pilgrimage, if you like, to Napoleon Street in 2012 and Malcolm's house had just been torn down to make way for the apartments that now stand. I was stunned to see that most of what's in the film was still there after so many years. It's such a working-class area of Melbourne with so much character. You covered a lot more ground than I did and it was great to see literally every location as it exists today.

One of my three favourite Australian films. The Castle, Kenny, and MALCOLM. As a Pom, I find Australian filmss uniquely quirky in a really good way. Malcolm is the ultimate socially inept nerd and he plays it so well. The film is creative genius and who ever thought of using the telephone ring generators used in the music during the hold up in the bank. Can you imagine following that Honda Zot along the road when it splits in two, you would be sworn off drink for the rest of your life .

Wow, thanks so much for that, so much to love about this film, Colin and John both great actors, in 2020 it feels like opening a time capsule looking back at the 80s. I remember reading some years ago that the house malcom lived had a couple of old guys living in it and it was feral. It was basically only used for the outside scenes and internals were on a set. Visited Melbourne 2 weeks ago, chatted to a driver of the city circle tram and was devastated to learn that he didn’t think the tram car restaurant would ever be running again. Thanks again for your effort, just let excellent. No I have to finish watching Malcom, yes , I was watching it , got curious about locations, paused the film, found your film etc.

Dear Paul What an outstanding little film! It is a worthy successor to the film "Malcolm" itself. Melbourne itself is one of the stars of this movie as far as I am concerned. I worked as a part time security officer driving around some of the locations at night whilst trying to make ends meet at uni-some viewers might recall the "Wormald Security" or 'MSS" signs that used to be outisde just about every warehouse. I got to know some of those little lanes, footpaths, and bridges pretty well. "Malcolm" is such a sweet film-the other film that springs to mind made around that time is, of course "Spotswood" Cheers and thankyou very much for bringing back some nice memories!

Great video, I was 15 years old when Malcolm was shown in the cinema, I loved it, back then I can clearly remember fish and chip shops you'd go to that were usually run by Greeks, the standard brick colour of those buildings, the music, I grew up in the northern suburbs at that time and in the new estates that were going up you'd have lots of vacant land, it was a welcoming sight to walk across those vacant blocks to the local fish and chip shop with your mates to get food, so long as you had money for food and smokes, somehow the whole world seemed ok.

Malcolm is one of my all time favourite flicks and definitely my favourite Aussie movie. I first watched it as a kid, and I still chuck it on every now and again. I remember seeing the Honda getaway car in action at the Moomba parade in the 80s, and later in life I worked at 628 Bourke St near Langs Lane. I'd be surprised if the getaway scooters didn't get any scrapes when they went down the laneway - would've been like threading the eye of a needle with that extra bodywork.
