When I was playing in the WNO and had just been through the 'loony bin' myself, Malcolm Arnold, who was also living in Cardiff, heard about me and sent me a score of his music with best wishes written on it. I haven't forgotten that act of kindness.

The Welsh National Orchestra. That's the abbreviation dealt with but ...what act of kindness? I guess we shall never know. 😥

Although being a troubled soul with mental health issues, Arnold was never more at ease than when absorbed in the act of composing. His output was prolific, music pouring forth in an apparently endless stream. These two engaging and larger-than-life sets of English Dances (the basis of the ballet, Solitaire) are probably among his most popular works. Listening again to them this morning has certainly set me up nicely for the day : I can't stop grinning with pleasure! Fine performance from Sir Charles Groves and the Bournemouth SO.
