I am not sure Sam was “murdered” per se. He was shot in by a an African American motel manager in self defense. Do I think he was robbed by the girl he went there with? Yes I do, and I don’t believe her rape story at all. Was there a government conspiracy to kill Sam Cooke? I seriously doubt it, he was never considered a fire brand by anyone. He had the support of a major label and millions of white fans. A Change Is Gonna Come was not even a big hit at the time. Was there a conspiracy between the girl and the manager to rip off Sam Cooke that got out of hand? Perhaps. The LAPD in its typical racist ways didn’t even bother to do a real investigation so we will never really know the truth.

By the end of this movie, you have completely forgotten that Denzel isn't actually Malcolm. Just embodied the part so perfectly. Fully agreed, he should have won an Oscar. Denzel has had so many great roles, but I still think this is his best work (Spikes too). And it reminds me of when I was watching it for the umpteenth time, it was on HBO one night and when it got to the end, I had almost forgotten about the part where Nelson Mandela speaks Malcolm's words and then it hit me that I was watching it on the night Nelson Mandela was elected the President of South Africa (about 18 months after the movie was released). I read a book by his friend, who shared his account of what happened that day. Malcolm told the organizers not to pat down attendees. In the run-up, he made several comments about being hunted and "a dead man already." He knew what was coming and wasn't afraid. Maybe he wanted it to happen in a public space with witnesses, considering the FBI was the likely culprit. The fact that he was murdered in a room full of witnesses and 58 years later the alleged assassins get exonorated tells you Malcolm was right about everything.

@@bigalbigs1 At that point Malcolm had enemies left and right. Once he left the Nation of Islam, he wanted to get more involved in politics, as opposed to just religion as Elijah Muhammad. He wanted to report the crime of racism to the United Nations and form alliances with Afrika. With America in the middle of the Vietnam War, this made him a threat. Also, after leaving the NOI, there was tension left between him and Mr. Muhammad, a case of professional jealousy. And the tension only grew as Malcolm learned true Islamic practices and publicly debunked Mr. Muhammad’s teachings and principles. So the NOI, US Government, FBI, and NYPD all pretty much wanted Malcolm dead.

The importance of this scene that so many people missed is the old lady. The lady said “Jesus will protect you” as a Muslim that hit him, his face said it all.

I wonder if Regina King was thinking of this scene when she put Sam Cooke’s song in One Night in Miami?

I think she put the song in the movie because one of the conflicts was Malcolm X got on Sam Cooke because he thought he could be doing more for black people so this song was Sam Cooke’s response to Malcolm and his contribution to the Civil Rights Movement
