Note that people don't need to go to breeders to get German Shepards; they are one of the most popular breeds in shelters and will often get euthanized even without behavioral issues simply due to lack of space.
@13bcoffee
2 жыл бұрын
I had both. I like the males for guard dog purposes. Many people back down just seeing them. The males can also battle other dogs if needed a lot better than the females. The females are good as family pets. They don't bark as much as the males and are very easy to train. My females were a lot smaller and lighter than the males. The females also eat less. My big males could really eat a lot. Both will go after critters such as possums and coyotes. This is a very adaptable breed that is at home on the farm, suburbs or city. Think about your purpose for getting this dog. A real downer is that this breed sheds fur. Also look out for hip problems.

Our family had GSD's. My brother only had males, I had females. His dogs were huge, yet very gentle with family. He's a "Bro" if you know what i mean. Black Camaro, weight lifting, steroids, guns,etc. He named his dogs with masculine names. Diesel, etc. I named my female dogs with German names. Heidi was such a fantastic dog, I named the next one Heidi. So i refer to them as Heidi 1 and Heidi 2. They have passed. My female dogs were just as protective as his male dogs. And they dont piss on everything. Hip displaysia got them all. I paid big bucks with a breeder who had certified papers (and online) linages to show no past problems with hips. She developed bone spurs on her spine, then hip displaysia. You never know. I threw her favorite toy, a Frisbee at the park. She fell down and never walked again. She was in such pain, Morphine didnt help. I had to put my sweet girl down. Its been 10 years now, and I cry while writing this.😢 Im a senior now and live in apartment. I would never put a working dog in an apartment. Even though it would compete me. It would be cruel.

I have two females German shepherds Bella is over 100 Gypsy is 85 lb. Many people think Bella is a male because of her size her demeanor her personality and all the things you say a male is.Gypsy is the opposite she's as you say a female is. Gypsies personality playful is very easy going.Bella is very serious and aggressive definitely not to be messed with. She is loving and caring with me but not so much with the rest of the family. She has had fights with pitbulls that got into our yard they really weren't fights it was more of a beating the pit bulls ran off. Coyote got in the yard was killed by Bella with Gypsy joining in. She senses danger she springs into without any hesitation. Gypsy will hesitate and be a follower. Neither one will eat food from anybody else I'm the only person that they take food from. The only thing I train them to do is potty training them starting 2 months continuously taking them outside everything else came naturally they learn from watching because of their intelligence. They learned on their own how to open doors open the refrigerator honk the car horn to name a few. German shepherds are amazing. They always do what I say. In essence Bella is acception to the rule of male and female differences. When I say she's female people have a hard time believing it until I prove it I tell her to roll on her back and I rub her tummy then they see the obvious and always surprised.

I have and have had, male and female German Shepherds. My females are incredibly protective of their humans and my Boston Terriers. My males watch the yard, but at the same time, they let the females do the work (as in the girls will bark first, and the males only get involved if they think the girls can't handle it.) So much depends on the genetics, breeding and training of these dogs. All my GSDs are incredibly bonded to me, because I talk to them constantly, and my hands are always on them, petting them. Czarina never left my side in the 12 yrs I had her, and now my Ophelia follows me everywhere, while the boys take a wait and see attitude.

Most owners are laypeople & hardly experts on dog behavior. Professionals are called "professional" for a reason. Also, generalized statements & observations are just that, general. You can find instances of any generalized statement not being entirely accurate if you look hard enough. That's not the point & defeats the purpose of a generalized statement. It's like saying human males are taller than human females then pointing to a WNBA player & saying, "but not always". What's the point you're making?

We had a male GSD that was one of only two in a litter to a large female and came with a pedigree of Austrian and Australian champions. For various reasons we collected the puppy at 13 weeks and by that time he was growing at a fast rate due to having vast quantities of his mothers milk. He grew to be a perfectly proportioned dog of 55kgs but 1" taller than the maximum that pedigree would allow. He was immensely strong who protected the house and us extremely well but he very rarely barked to announce his presence.

@@Robert-mn8gc No, he was a standard coat GSD but was as I said bigger than pedigree would accept. He was perfectly proportioned dog and very powerful. The mother was of Australian champion line and she was as large as she could be and she was sired with another large dog, couple that with the fact that she only had a litter of two puppies, you can imagine that they had the very best start even from an embryo. When we were asked to select the puppy we wanted we were presented with two puppies at 6 weeks that were best described as large flat blobs on the floor. We chose the one that actually moved and then collected it some weeks later due to our pre-arranged holiday. At 13 weeks he was on his own with his mother who still managed to give him milk. With that start it was not surprising that he became a giant.

My husband really wants a male, but we have a female available. The male we would have to wait up until January or later. I would be fine with the female. Just watched the first minute, sorry, disagree. My last 3 boys were cuddly, my current female is aloof. ALL have been Fantastic with children and people. Their characteristics are very similar, irrespective of gender.

I said the same thing. Out of my 4 dogs (Chihuahua, Pug mix, Doberman mix, and Malinois), while they are all sweet and loving dogs; my boys are sweet and more in-tune with my feelings and want to be with me. My females are sweet but rather we doing what they want. After 14 years of training dogs, boys have always been my go to. Why? Because all my females have been more alpha and aloof. Super smart and sweet as well but my boys have always been more driven to listen and were less stubborn. Boysbwill always be my go to

That's not necessary true my sister has had male German Shepherds most of her life and they were much calmer than the female ones she's had in the past. She definitely prefers the male.

Have a 7 year old female since 10 weeks old! Courteous, loyal, quiet but attentive, highly intelligent, easily trainable, great with everything and everyone!!!!! A true blessing in every way! Loves other animals. Quite the exception! I’m blessed ❣️. She’s nit big on being hugged tight but loves to be with everyone! Not a pushover though. Can sense people a mile away yet easy with herself. Has never shown her teeth or growled but she knows I’m also watching out for her too!

We have an intact male we've raised from a pup. He's a big snuggly goofball that has never met a person he doesn't love. He especially loves kids. The minute he sees a little person his ears are up ,tail is wagging, and he's locked eyes begging for them to come up so he can lick their face. My youngest calls him her best friend and she cried for hours the first time we had to kennel him to go on vacation. She spent the next few days telling anyone that would listen how much she missed her dog. I do not regret getting a male at all. I couldn't ask for a better family dog.

I have had several different dog breeds over the last 50 years. I've owned 2 female shepherds in that time. They were amazing dogs. Currently, I have a male shepherd, he is the best dog I've ever owned. Get either a male or female, you won't be disappointed.

Great video. I'm the proud owner of a 5yr. Old female named Marley. She has a alpha personality. Got her at 5 months old from a friend. But unfortunately he didn't socialize her with other people or dogs. She is great with children and after she has met someone is very friendly. Very protective and always barks letting me know someone is in my apartment building. Weight is 75lbs and exercises regularly. Too me it's the only dog breed to own. Give them lots of ❤ and they return the love ❤

You're basically talking about human females here. Female dogs are more protective, independent and serious, while male dogs are more goofy and affecionate. Females are also known to bond faster to one person only.

I've only ever had females. We lost ours last month and plan on getting another in the future. I've had 2 male gsd/huskie mixes. Good dogs but I'm not a fan of the husky influence and their wanting to be runners. I miss my girl so much. She would have been 13 in October. So it was a good run for her but she was so bonded to me! I swear she knew I was going to stand up and move before I did it. My shadow Velcro dog

I with disagree most of this - training is not the first thing - breeding is (different lines have different temperaments - then training. In my experience (over 15 years with shepherds). The males are more loyal and the girls tend to give you the middle finger). Watching the puppies play does not determine anything- they have a pack mentality and it’s not always the males that are on top - just depends on the mentality

honestly my female gsd was a lot like this- except she isnt ‘feminine’ per say- many people assume she is a male first time they see her- she has a deep bark, growl, and howl, she is taller and a bit more broad then most females- but yeah other than that yeah- really- my grandfather used to have a silver and black female named Danielle who weighed 120 pounds but could easily jump over a 6ft fence, this was back in like the 80s tho so
@Jasper-yb9cz

also with my female- she is kinda a bit of both for the bonding with people- she bonds with a lot of people, mainly my grandparents and i but she is great with others if they are welcomed there. but she definitely has her favorite which is my grandfather, proud to say im the second favorite lol

my dog is like 72 pounds. thats pretty good for a female german shepherd on the slightly larger side. Danielle was my grandfathers german shepherd, the one that weighed 120 pounds. She gave birth to a litter of 13 pups, 12 of which survived. Yeah she would weigh a lot cause of that. But she could scale fences easily.

German Shepherds are renowned for their exceptional intelligence, which makes them one of the smartest dog breeds. They have remarkable learning abilities, excellent problem-solving skills, and can quickly understand and obey commands. Thanks to their intelligence, they are highly trainable and can be used for various tasks, such as police work, search and rescue operations, assistance, and as loyal family companions. Their sharp minds and keen senses make them highly versatile, enabling them to perform a wide range of activities and tasks with ease.

Or just be crazy and get one of each like us! I didn't want any, but they choose us. The male protected my middle daughter from all the other ones nipping at herand the female wouldn't leave me. With 3 kids it was the best decision because they keep each other in line. I've had so many different breeds of dogs, hence why I never wanted another dog, but these pups are so easy in relation to them. Best decision! We live in the country and have bears, coyotes, and bobcats in the backyard, so I also like that having two allows them to have to back up, as well as a work buddy since they will be herding our goats and chickens. I now see the craze... Oh quick edit: I also notice my girl beats the snot out of my boy, so if he acts up she puts him back down, so he never acts a fool to the kids. I just think that's cool she make's sure he isn't too hard on any of them.

My male is much more affectionate than my female. When I pet her on the head she keeps walking away, so that I 2:11 end up petting her butt. She doesn't like her feet or ears being touched. When we train she is very flighty. ( She is 4). When it's time to train with my male, he comes to me, sits and I swear it looks like he is ready to salute.

LOL! My female is not a western Shepherd. She is a western German shepherd, if you can say that correctly. She is extremely alpha. She hates outsiders. Much larger than American male shepherd, and stronger. Love both my shepherds, but my male is the wimp compared to her. He is an American shepherd.

I checked this book kzitem.infoUgkxSw1k29V8f0aNwyGI6qRGYJc3E4Y4Eoxy out at the library - read it cover to cover - and then decided to purchase it, so i can refer to it as needed. This provides additional ways to train in addition to the two obedience classes my sicx month old belgian malinois has already attended. Despite having dogs my whole life, i have been voraiciously reading dog training and psychology books lately given my little "maligator" has a mind of her own (extremely smart but obstinate) , and this one ranks among the best.
