Ever wondered what sets apart male and female German Shepherds? 🐾

Yes! My trainer that I know who trains military and police and private protection told me females are wired differently and so you have to train them differently and if you don’t understand them then they will be very hard for most ppl. I had only female GS and I have to say I agree with him. Each one I’ve had was different in personality but the difficulty was so much we went with a Belgian shepherd this time. We are happy with our choice, but man I do miss a GS! Growing up, I had the most mellow beautiful big GS girl….. she was perfect. Haven’t found one with her disposition since and I can’t recall what bloodline she came from. She was very big with long hair and she was paired with her half sister who was a timber wolf GS mix. Both were amazing dogs

I agree. Having grown up with a male GSD, it’s been my experience that this truly one of a kind dog was both protective, and nurturing. He thought he was a human. He thought he was a lap dog. He nurtured my ailing mother in the bed where she slept, (the dog was never allowed on the bed or furniture). I’ll never forget Jack. In fact, I kept a small picture of him in the living room of my house years later and for the longest time.

What's the answer to a very very stubborn female GS help
@caninecine
2 ай бұрын
Hey there! Dealing with a stubborn female German Shepherd, huh? I totally get it-they can be a handful! Here are a few tips that might help: Stay Consistent: Make sure everyone in the house is on the same page with commands and rules. Mixed signals can confuse her. Positive Vibes Only: Reward her good behavior with treats, praise, or playtime. Dogs respond really well to positive reinforcement. Patience is Key: Sometimes stubbornness just means she needs a bit more time to understand what you want. Hang in there and keep at it! Burn Off That Energy: German Shepherds have tons of energy, so make sure she gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. A tired dog is a well-behaved dog! If you're still having trouble, it might be worth chatting with a professional dog trainer. They can give you personalized tips and tricks. Good luck!

My Suzy is an Indian Spitz with the heart of a tiger 😂. She can be everyone's best friend and worst enemy at the same time. If I would add another dog it will be a female GSD only. And I will name her Sheena. So Suzy and Seena will become partners in crime ❤❤❤.i love my Suzy

A female that I'm helping socialize and desensitize had their human pass away. I spend 15 minutes a day with her when I stop by and assist my friend who is the main caregiver. She's 1-2 years old and been penned up her whole life. The first day she was reactive to me. The second day I brought my dog and she took to him immediately. After that, she got along with me. People thought I was brave to get in the pen with her because she's reactive to people she doesn't know well. I trusted her and she reciprocated. I take her on walks around the block, shes a natural on the leash. She'd never been walked. Loose leash a good portion of the time, only when I need to re direct her. She is still in the works on being environmentally de sensitized but has shown progress. I'm thinking of adopting her but need more time with her. I needed to know she gets along with my dog which she does. She's really alert which I like, but will be an obstacle to over come for her to socialize with people. She seems to be fine with other dogs that are not assertive. For not having much interaction with people other than her previous human, she's come along way.

Seems you are on the right track. I took on a female Anatolian Shepherd 2yo - covid puppy unsocialized. She didn't like anybody when she came here and was installed in a special pen I had made for her in the bavkyard. Which was also fenced. Started slow. Took to the feed store. I could use the aisles and my body to block her from large men and any size dog but especially big ones. First trip was interesting. She was horrified, but so curious. Now, she loves it, but still dislikes big dogs. German Shepherd is a far more reliable dog than Anatolian. Should become a very good dog.

Female, definitely! My son, an over the road trucker, got a female working line GSD puppy in July and she is absolutely the smartest dog I have ever worked with! He wouldn't let me put her into obedience training while she was still small enough to squish and we wound up sending her to a board and train puppy boot camp. It cost A LOT of money but it was worth every penny! She is now 9 months old and positively beautiful! My only issue with her is: if my husband or son are within earshot, she completely ignores me. I have been her main caregiver and handler. She is going on the road with my son this week!

Thanks for reaching out about your German Shepherd's behavior. It sounds like you have a great rescue dog who might still be adjusting to her new home. Here are some tips that might help: Digging to Escape: Natural Instincts: Digging is pretty normal for dogs. They might do it to create a safe spot, get comfortable, or try to escape something they find scary. Boredom or Anxiety: Dogs often dig when they’re bored or anxious. Make sure she gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Try regular walks, playtime, and interactive toys. Past Trauma: As a rescue, she might have had some tough experiences that make her want to escape. Creating a consistent and safe environment can help reduce this behavior over time. Not Barking: Quiet Personality: Some dogs just don’t bark much. Your German Shepherd might be one of those naturally quiet dogs. Past Punishments: If she was punished for barking before, she might have learned not to do it. Positive reinforcement for good behavior can help her feel more confident. Health Issues: Sometimes health problems can affect barking. If this is a new change, a vet visit might be a good idea to rule out any issues. Addressing Trauma: Safe Space: Make sure she has a safe and comfy spot where she feels secure. Routine: Dogs love routine. A predictable schedule can make her feel more at ease. Positive Reinforcement: Reward her with treats and praise for calm and positive behavior to build her confidence and trust. Professional Help: Trainer or Behaviorist: Getting help from a professional dog trainer or behaviorist who knows about rescue dogs can give you specific strategies to help her adjust and overcome her trauma. Remember, patience and consistency are super important. Every rescue dog is different, and it might take some time for her to feel fully secure in her new home. Keep giving her love, care, and understanding, and you’ll likely see positive changes over time. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

“Females are Moodier.” 😂

I had a female but considering all the different lines, it’s hard to know what personality they will have. My female was loyal to the family, but she always herded and her herding and prey drive was overwhelming. She had so much energy and would chase anything……. She also perceived everything as a threat even with socialization. She would bark A LOT at everything was extremely dog aggressive in public (not at home tho she was gentle with our cats and other dogs)…….. she was very protective over out children and she had the nickname as mother hen, because she didn’t want the kids out of her sight or else she would whine and pace. One time my son went to a friends house and she refused to come back inside until he returned. She stayed on our porch for 2 days. However growing up we had a more show quality GS female. Long hair, very big compared to our last GS who was relatively small at 60 pounds. The one growing up was very sociable, and loved everyone with very low herding and prey drive. She was amazing and easy to raise. My other family member had a male plush coat GS that had the slanted back, and he was crazy. Barked at everything and was out of control with his aggression. They did train and were experienced dog owners but eventually they gave up after a few years after the dog nipped a small child and they gave him to the trainer and that trainer said that was the hardest dog he’s ever owned. My friend trains GS for police work and all his dogs are short hair, extremely large and extremely docile and calm. They are perfect in social environments and don’t bark. Even the retired ones have gone to regular homes at ease. Bc of the wide range of bloodlines and the varying differences in temperament, I decided to get a Belgian shepherd after our GS passed, and I’m very happy with our choice. She reminds me of our beloved GS but is different enough to match our lifestyle. She is spunky and playful and will play with our crazy toddlers all day! She is versatile, and will play fetch longer than our lab! She is always so happy to see us and they are sweet dogs. Every GS I’ve met were serious dogs and not puppy like. But that’s my experience. I love both breeds but I chose the Belgian bc I wanted a more fre spirited, less serious and kid like dog. We r happy with our Belgian and bc their are less breeders and not so many bloodlines, you can predict more so what temperament they will have.

@aubsarg0222 It sounds like you've had quite the range of experiences with different breeds and bloodlines! Your observations highlight the importance of understanding breed variations and individual temperaments. It's fascinating how each dog can have such unique traits, influenced by breeding and upbringing. Your decision to choose a Belgian Shepherd based on your lifestyle preferences is understandable, and I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your choice. Thank you for sharing your insights-it's always valuable to hear about personal experiences with different breeds.

@@caninecine yeah I love both breeds, this time around we chose a Belgian, but I would love to own a German shepherd like I had growing up….. personally, I think Belgians aren’t as physically attractive as a German, and mine reminds me of a bat lol bc she has very dark eyes, fawn with a black mask so it’s black with black eyes staring at you lol…. She’s got a beautiful coat coloration but I miss walking a German shepherd around town lol they are truly beautiful
