Mali: Junta Seeks to Extend Rule, Opposition Parties Protest | Firstpost Africa
In Mali, opposition parties and civil society groups have rejected a proposal to extend the military rule in the West African nation. Earlier, Mali's Junta organised a national dialogue which recommended several more years of military rule. It also said when elections eventually be held, the junta chief Colonel Assimi Goita should be a candidate for president. Mali's opposition has denounced the dialogue, calling it a sham. They say the military wants to stay in power forever by taking Mali's people hostage. Following back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021, Mali's junta postponed elections indefinitely citing a precarious security situation due to jihadist attacks. Watch this video for details.
