The Vovos mall in the Votanikos area aspired to become the largest shopping center in Greece, surpassing The Mall Athens in Marousi by 25% in size.
It had a projected area of 70,000 square meters and would also include 3,000 parking spaces.
It was part of the Double Regeneration project and had started in 2008, right at the beginning of the great financial crisis.
In fact, it was to be completed within just one year, in 2009, with the construction rates record for International Engineering. Finally the constructions stopped at 70%, with the block of the Regional Council, after the continuous appeals of the residents of the area.
It is also well known the great speed with which Babis Vovos wanted to complete new projects, so that he could move on to the next ones. Except that in the case of the mall in Votaniko, the colossal investment of 250 million euros "stumbled" on the reactions of the residents of the area and was finally canceled by the Regional Council.
All possibilities are now open for how the unfinished Vovos mall will be utilized.
The 70% unfinished mall of the former real estate group of Babis Vovos is certainly one of the most shocking examples of the impact that the real estate bubble had on the dynamically developing real estate companies in Greece.
From the freezing of operations onwards, and of course with the economic developments around Babis Vovos and Dietheni Techniki running, the mall was essentially left to its own devices.
The group collapsed and its reorganization plan brought the mall into the hands of its new owners: Alpha Bank and Piraeus Bank.
The latter even recommended the company "aep Eleonas" to manage the Mall project.
But what will happen next has not been finalized yet.
