How could you fire Abel and Richard? The heart and soul of the group.

I always thought that was Jorge who played that lead in Peace and I'm barely realizing it's Abel. Wow.

I have a story about Richard. I'm a vibes player from Berkeley. At 28 years old I met THE man Pete Escovedo at a music camp (1989) where he teaching. He was so cool & nice and defines the word "class." Maybe 3 weeks later Pete actually called me up asked me to play an outdoor gig! It was at the Todos Santos Square Park in Concord, CA. No rehearsals, I never even met the musicians I was going to play with, and I was totally green - meaning I hadn't done very many gigs yet. When I got there was like maybe 1500 -2000 people in this park!, I was terrified. So it was an Escovedo Family Gig, with Pete, his brothers Bobby & Phil (perc & bass), Juan on congas, a trumpet player named Julius Melendez (who was great), but the highlight by far for me was meeting Richard Kamode on Fender Rhodes and Hammond organ. I got to setup opposite Richard and he could tell I was nervous. Pete called songs that I knew, like "Wachi Wara", "Philadelphia Mambo" "Morning" and other standards. Richard's time and feel was so relaxed & solid, creating this huge groove that you just fell into. I got a smile after my solos from both Pete and Richard, which was quite a feeling for me. I continued to play with Bobby & Phil for years. I learned about Richard's condition but continued to play with him many times, until he moved to Colorado and eventually passed away. Rest in peace Richard Kamode.

Jorge Santana's 70s solo recordings with Richard Bean needs a mini documentary. Such fun jams of funk and disco
