I must address this: this is how I felt and saw Malta. I don’t live there. My goal was to talk about a few aspects of Maltese culture, not try and find what’s horrible about the country. To all of you who keep commenting about the lack of shots with cranes: I’m from Miami. I’m immune to this since my city grows at a rapid pace. Cranes equal development and I address that issue in the interview with Mr. Spiteri. Also, since I see them everywhere in my city, they become an afterthought, so why would I take a shot of an ugly crane I barely notice? It's easy to nitpick when you're a local; you live and breath your city/country's problems every day. How can you expect a guy who comes for a few days to truly see what you see unless it's blatantly apparent like say Detroit? I've seen a lot of fluff travel vloggers that go around posting videos with mindless drone shots, tropical house music and who walk around on selfie-cam mode blabbering no knowledge or even an attempt to understand Malta, yet ironically, they don't get this spew of negative comments. Yet here I am interviewing Maltese people and trying to learn the culture and I get a bunch of self-hating Maltese commenting that this isn't real. I strongly believe that disliking a video because it doesn’t depict YOUR lifestyle and ignoring the effort in producing this episode and trying to emulate the experience of the country in my eyes, falls under the category of trolling. If your experience or life in Malta sucks and you hate your country, make an episode about that and talk about cranes and dead birds, but quit hating and telling me this is all fluff because I’m just showing the Malta I know to the world.

You seem to have missed the point totally. You are not getting to know the Maltese people or the culture. You are promoting the good things and points about it only so saying you are trying to get to know the culture and people is a bit of a lie. Either its a holiday promotion video which is what it looks like or it is a video trying to get to know the actually island, culture and people. Cannot be both.
@MitchellTravels

@@mradamcass Ironically, you missed the point. I'm not "promoting" anything here; wrong channel. What I do is discover a place and talk to locals about it to broadcast that to KZitem. If I wanted to promote something, I would gush over things and say how awesome everything is; something that isn't done in this episode. I ask questions and try to learn as best I can about what makes a place tick, this is why I bother to interview a chef and ask about Maltese cuisine's past, present and future. This is why I sat down with Paul and discuss development, rents, football, etc.

Great video, however you have a bit of a mistake regarding the language. It is Semitic due to the Arabic influence when we were under Arab rule. It is a common misconception that it is due to the Phoenicians, however it is completely unrelated as for a certain period (after Phoenician rule) Malta was uninhabited.

Our language isn't "semitic because of the Phoenicians". They spoke Punic. Our language originated around 1050 - 1400AD, and it's origins are Siculo-Norman (Arabic derived)
@pawluspiteri1
5 жыл бұрын
JPC 86 note that we speak a semitic language and we write in Latin characters which stem from Greek who in turn utilised the Phoenician diffused Punic Phoenician symbols. "A" is Alef is an "ox" in Phoenician and we feed an ox "GĦALEF" and "b" is a nest BEJTA = thus Alphabet. Here is an view: Many scholars of the Maltese language are of the opinion that modern Maltese originated from Arabic, rather than Punic, and goes back to circa 1050 AD. Others do not entertain the hypothesis that the entire Punic origin has been wiped out of the language. This is so especially since both are Semitic tongues and it would be very likely to obscure one beneath the other; the older beneath the new, the 'dead' Punic beneath the 'surviving' Arabic. The subsequent Romantic overlay that followed gave Maltese its unique Mediterranean character. Maltese of today is analogous to the Lebanese language. The eastern Mediterranean language group is exactly what Maltese developed into. Aramaic (along side Greek) was the lingue franca of the whole eastern Mediterranean at the dawn of the Arab conquest. Further, the number of invading Arabs was relatively small as compared with the local populations of their dominions. The very nature of the number of invadors as opposed to the local populations resulted with an amalgam of spoken tongues that contained high percentages of local usages. For example, upon analyzing spoken Lebanese, many Phoenician, Aramaic, Syriac, in addition to Turkish and other languages come through as ones overlayed with Arabic. In fact, the Arabs and their cohorts of the 11th century did not speak any formal or classical Arabic but another amalgam of dialects mixed in with Arabic. It is very likely that most of the so-called Arabs of North Africa were a mix of Punic, Berber and Roman blood, much like their mother tongues. Based on these facts and the unreliable claim that all the Maltese were wiped off their islands, one can conclude that the Maltese language of today continues to have a strong influence of Punic Phoenician. Attributing the roots of Maltese words exclusively to Arabic is wrong especially since both Phoenician and Arabic have the same Semitic word roots and it is impossible to conclude that a Maltese word that sounds like a similar Arabic word necessarily comes from Arabic and not from Phoenician. Jumping to such conclusions is very common today specifically because Arabic is well known and Phoenician or Punic is virtually unknown by philologists and linquists. The Maltese speak a language with ancient roots. The language goes back to the beginning of Maltese history, including Punic times. Malta had formed part of the Carthaginian empire and changed hands a number of times during the Punic Wars (264-146 BC) before becoming Roman "civitas foederata" in 218 BC. During Roman times the Maltese continued to speak Punic. However, it has to be said that Punic inscriptions in Malta stop in the 1st century AD. In Acts, the inhabitants of Malta were called "barbaroi" meaning that they did not speak a civilized tongue-Latin or Greek but Punic. Evidently, implying that Malta was still pristinely Semetic in A.D. 60, despite some 280 years of Roman rule. The Phoenician colonies were left speaking Phoenician (Punic) even when Phoenicia had stopped using it. In fact, Phoenician Punic continued to be spoken in Carthage and the former Punic terroritories until the 5th century. Saint Augustine, doctor of the Church and Bishop of Hippo (near Carthage) testified to that in his writings and called the Punic language "our own tongue". This fact alone, recorded both in Quintinus' Insulae Melitae descriptio (see Horatio C.R.Vella -- The Earliest Description of Malta; Lyons 1536 -- 1980) as well as the later account of Kircher's 1637 visit to Malta as given in Mundus subterraneus (see J. Zammit Ciantar -- A Benedictine's Notes on Seventeenth-Century MALTA -- 1998), may render it plausible to believe that at least some of the original Punic tongue may have survived. To add to the above: many guides who mix with so many tourists especially Lebanese and peoples from Canaan, we sense that our tongue is very close in intonation and semantics. After all the Phoenicians and Carthagenians settled in large numbers in Old Chartage (now Tunisia) and Old Western Arabic Sicily. And even if one assumes that all the Maltese were depopulated, which is debatable, weren't the islands repopulated by the indigenous Phoenician descendents who had settled in Sicily and crossed over to our islands.

I loved this... sadly, it only shows the bright side of living in Malta. You neglected to mention the exhausting heat for 8 months of the year, only a brief glance at the absolutely awful traffic, or as Mr.Spiteri mentioned, the prohibitive pricing for new couples with the absolutely appalling wages, especially for the majority, lower end earners... Very well put together, I'll agree to that, but there is a dark side to being here as well. Don't get me wrong, I love my country, but all is not flowers and little duckies. In your presentation, it seems as it Malta is deserted.. now touching half a million inhabitants (burdened with illegal immigrants), this is the most densely populated country in Europe... How you managed to get nearly nobody in your video is remarkable.

I've never been to Malta but it's easy to give credence to your sentiments; it's the same for almost all travel features, video or otherwise: highlighting the good and the exotic while brushing off the darker, sadder facets of life in a place. Lisbon, like Malta, is a good example of this. Recently people have been claiming it to be Europe's hidden gem, the "it" city, and hundreds of videos have sprung up on KZitem highlighting the gorgeous aspects of that effeverscent city by the Tejo. But people have been pushed out of homes by prohibitive rent prices due to Airbnbs and the development of establishments that cater to tourists. Locals say Lisbon is quickly becoming unlivable, and it is losing its genius loci. It's saddening. I hope to visit Malta soon, and already I know I would love it, but it will be difficult to ignore the troubles you just mentioned.

Don't let this happen to your beautiful country -- it will be a disaster, and a terrible loss for Europa!!!

This is beautifully made but it is also cherry picking at it's most extreme and I understand that you wouldn't know what it's like to live daily in Malta. We don't have the best of beaches and most of the summer they are crowded, but we do have sand less bays that are not as easily accessible that are very good, such as Kalanka & Xrobb l-ghagin (In the south near Marsaxlokk) , Dar il-fekruna (Up north by Mellieha), asking diving schools would probably get you another couple names. We don't have a countryside to walk in, as it's mostly privately owned for fields, and even if you do fancy a walk between the dogs that are left to guard the fields who can easily get out and harass you, the possible of lead raining on you from illegal hunting and quarry trucks driving down the narrow roads make it a bothersome experience. Traffic is worse in summer due to the heat, but you can avoid a lot of it if you don't travel at around 7-8am and 5-6pm which are the rush hours were workers get off work and delivery trucks do their deliveries. Also places such as St Julians, Pace Ville, Hamrun and Gzira are always slow. The heat is no joke, try to avoid being outside between 12.30pm - 2.30pm (June, July, August) and wear sunscreen unless you want to end up like a lobster. Traveling by Bus especially in the north is very problematic in summer, taking the bus extra early will save you a lot of waiting. Unemployment is low it's true, but the minimum wage is not a livable wage. Construction site galore, The constant noise, dust and unpleasantness that come with it. Pastizzi are life, ricotta and peas are the classic but you should also try Imqaret, they are dough wrapped around dates and fried, or a maltese ftira (bread). Also don't be afraid to ask, most of the time people will help you, sometimes even go out of their way to make sure you get where you want or what you want.

I’m sorry but your narrative tonation is really synthetic and not nice to listen to. A natural tone would be much easier to listen to.
