"Mamo Chitte", is the second song that has been paired with my own composition in the album - NUTON O SONATON 3. This song is an all time favourite with lovers of Rabindrasangeet. This apparently frivolous and easy rhythmic song conceals much more beneath its surface, much more than what meets the eye. It is a celebration of the dualities of life, which is a contrast but never a conflict.
Light and darkness, beauty and ugliness, life and death; life is a tapestry of contrasts, an oscillation between opposites and is never constant. The rhythm of the song pulsates with this eternal rhythm, the rhythm of life. And his rhythm makes room for more expressions. Entering the realm of bandishes, the composition naturally puts on a very different attire.
I had initially tried to compose a song on the lines of the Rabindrasangeet, maintaining the philosophy. However the compositions tend to become more like imitations of the original, a "Hindi Rabindrasangeet" rather, more than a Bandish. Scrapping the idea, I finalized that a composition typically in the lines of a bandish will be an apt juxtaposition. The new composition need not express what the song does. The very celebration of opposites and dualities is what the Rabindrasangeet is about, so even if my composition is an apparent opposite, it still justifies itself.
Sarode maestro and leading music arranger Prattyush Banerjee uses a host of interesting percussive sounds in this song. The song ends in a climax, but with a different feel. It has been designed in the form of a Sawal-Jawab, a conversation between the two art forms. The notes of Kafi and the sounds used give the whole new feeling to what has so oft been repeated and sung over the years.
I compliment my friends, Argha and Soham for creating this video in a very short time and within multiple restrictions. Good job indeed !
