I have severe social anxiety, so I find it hard to make friends. All the friends I had in high school have gotten either married or have just disconnected themselves from the friend group. My college friends are in another state (I was an out-of-state student), so it's hard to maintain contact when they are busy and far away. I also have a bad habit of unintentionally pushing people away, so then I just feel awkward if I reach out to them first. I do have a couple of online friends, and I have felt a lot closer to them than I have with my real friends recently. I have opened up to them the most than I ever have with my own best friend from middle school. My friend group has never opened up whenever it came to serious issues (and we are all females), yet my online friends are always open to hearing me out and give advice, and I do the same for them. So, I guess I have friends? But not in the traditional way where we can meet up and do dumb shit together in real life. Online friends are still friends, same with old friends even if there isn't 24/7 contact. Also, I would just like to say that if you have a few or no friends, that doesn't make you a loser. Some people are just not sociable or have anxiety as I do. It can also be hard to connect to people that don't share common interests. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there! The worse that can happen is that you don't make friends, but they will come eventually.

This is me right now. I don't have many friends and it sucks. Sometimes I feel like I'm not memorable at all. No contact for a long time. I just feel like nobody cares about me. It's truly sad sometimes. I wish I could have people who I could hang out with ( even if we're doing nothing/ just chilling at home). Sometimes I long for that just knowing that you're on the mind of someone who wants to be around you and they truly care about you.
@h0rrorland
4 жыл бұрын
@@wshelby83 I feel the same way about how I may not seem memorable to anyone or that they don't care. But I'm sure we must mean something to the friends we currently have, we just kind of think that they don't care about us. At least that's how it is for me because it's my anxiety making me think things like that. It really does suck not having friends to chill with.

People move away for family or jobs, especially after college. People get hitched, start families and priorities change. Got bills and a mortgage pay and kids to raise. Things change over time. Every year Thanksgiving brings us back to our families and our old neighborhoods. Since we're all back in the area for Thanksgiving my college buddies and I plan a get-together on Black Friday. It has become tradition. We've been doing this for more almost a decade. It's amazing. Outside of Black Friday I also don't have many friends.

A big factor that wasn't put into the equation (at least in this conversation) is the fact that nowadays many people living in countries with lesser economical strength go abroad for work and/or better working conditions, which results in not keeping in touch for years sometimes, as ultimately they may form families in those respective countries. So it's not as much "not having friends" as it is not being with the ones you've grown with, due to Globalization and circumstance... Making new friends as an adult, however, doesn't come as easily, 'cause it can feel forced when compared to the dynamic of how a child goes about it: spontaneously; no trust-issues; no expectations - - just living the moment... Normally people look for the ones that share their interests, but I've found that you'll have much deeper, unexpected connections when stuff isn't planned out, and ESPECIALLY when that someone gave me a bad first-impression, which totally busts that saying. On the Polar Bear opposite of that I've ended up being massively disappointed and betrayed by almost every good first-impression, further validating that it's just an urban bullshit myth. So remember: Some aren't being rude - - they're just honest. Fake smiles have no substance.

This sounds like my dad. His maturity level is stunted and his marriage to my mom isn't great, and he has a hard time spending time with people who have different lifestyles or opinions. Not saying this is every guy's problem, but I have a strong feeling that that is a huge part of the problem with older, lonely men. Humility goes a long way. Also, the stigma of going out by yourself needs to die. If I got tickets to a game and couldn't find anyone to go with me, I'm frickin going by myself and enjoying it. Same with the movies, restaurants, amusement parks, whatever. I'm waiting for the right people to join me in friendship but until then, I'm not pitying myself at home. Live your life, friends or no friends.

This is a very hard topic to cover. Going by the information given, a large group of men experience loneliness for whatever reason. This takes away their support network, which can clearly lead to physical symptoms like heart problems and in many cases suicide. This is something that needs to be addressed. This guy is the CEO of a company who shares his lack of irl connection and the first response is 'what a loser'. Instead of ridiculing the guy for reaching out, why not have a beer with him, or just offer an ear? If you need a friend, don't be afraid to reach out.

Dang I relate. When I was in high school my parents would say " are those your friend?" And I would reply " there just my acquaintances"

I think it has to do with social media and the way our society is today 💁🏽♀️ we are becoming distant and don’t know how to talk to people anymore

Also awareness is a key to make someone have a wake up call and specially now we are so lost in the online world I'm not surprised to see more of this coming into an effect.

As long as you have family you don't need friends. What is a friend but someone who shares mutual interests and can help you out when you're in a bind (and vice versa)?

depends on what your personality is as well. Personally i dont require many friends. Maybe 1 or 2 really close ones and thats all you need. i cant stand people who call everyone they meet a "friend"

I have one best friend. I rarely get to see em. Maybe once every couple of months. Maybe. But, if it wasn't for em. I'd be lost. So, I can relate but at the same time I can open to someone if i truly need too
