Common sense prevails! Trains run to a timetable and the majority of railway staff do their best to ensure that trains run to that timetable. You don’t delay the possibly hundreds of people on the train who made it on time, by waiting for one person who didn’t; and if you wait for one, how many more do you wait for? There has to be a cut off and that is the departure time in the timetable with the train doors closed early enough to allow the train to depart on time. A few seconds here and there all add up and could mean getting stopped at a junction because another train has reached its strike-in point for the junction before your trainers passes it’s strike-in point. Every delay gets compounded en-route and can not only delay your train, but escalate into thousands of minutes of delay across the network from the original delay.
