I clicked on this video because it brought back memories of my great great uncle teaching me how to build cold frames from old windows next to his garage - shed.

I have two. I believe it was Oliver, the younger one (he's almost 8 now) that walked by in the video. The other one, Abby is older, she is the buff and white color mix. She is 10 1/2 now with heart issues, but she is still hanging in there, and still occasionally makes it into the garden to pick her own beans. :)

Hi just curious how much you think it cost to build? Looking into greenhouses and weather to purchase or build one. Thanks. It looks amazing! Also...do you heat it?
@oneseedoneworld
2 жыл бұрын
@@cynthiaroberts9639 Total cost is kind of hard to determine. The recycled windows I got for $200 off of Craigslist. The wood for the base walls I had left over from another project that I had purchased prior to all the lumber prices sky rocketing. The 2x4 framing I purchased after prices went up, so that ran a few hundred I think. The clear corrugated roofing panels (2ft x 8ft) run about $17 each in my area. The flooring was also left over from another project. I'm guessing maybe about $1000 for everything, not including having contractors wire it and install all the electrical stuff. I don't heat it, so it is pretty cold in there in the winter time. I mainly use it to extend my growing season in the spring and fall. I know that isn't very specific, but I hope info helps give you an idea! Let me know if you have more questions.

What kind of temperature/thermostat system is that you're using?
@oneseedoneworld
2 жыл бұрын
The greenhouse isn't temp controlled. I do have two exhaust fans on either end to help control heat, and then the digital display you see is a Ubibot GS1-A WiFi Thermometer Hygrometer, Wireless Temperature Data Logger, Remote Humidity Monitor, just to help me keep track of what is going on in there. :) Link here for more details on it: amzn.to/3HTlmZB

Do you build the greenhouse around the size of the windows or do you get windows to fit your greenhouse? Which do you get first??
@oneseedoneworld
2 жыл бұрын
I bought the windows a few years ago and stored them in the shed until I was ready to build. The windows weren't all exactly the same size, so I built the wall frames to fit the average size of the windows. Then I trimmed the windows as needed to fit the walls.

You can do it! I bought the windows on Craigslist 3 years before I even started building this, and they sat in my shed. Then once I started building, I just figured out stuff as I went along (and changed my plans and ideas multiple times). Just take your time and work toward your end goal :)

Looks great. I hope you tested for lead paint before you sanded them like that. 90%+ of the time old windows were painted with lead paint. Judging from the crackling pattern, this was definitely lead thats now in the garden. And please wear a proper mask next time.

@oneseedoneworld

Thanks! I think you are referring to the glazing. I think I used DAP window glazing from Lowes, which is basically just like a putty. Its not too bad to work with, but takes a little getting used to putting it on so you can get some clean edges (some of mine are a bit rough). But you can get other brands/types too. I think they are all pretty similar.

How much was all the materials
@oneseedoneworld
2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say exactly since there was a lot of the wood that I used that had been left over from other projects. The windows were $200 on Craigslist. Roofing and end side corrugated plastic was $600. Plus there were all the other odds and ends like paint, gutters, etc. Not including electric I probably spent $1800 overall to build it (guesstimated). I had contractors do all the electrical work, but it was part of a larger job on our property that also included trenching, wiring a deck and rewiring a garage.
