“The bushman have propped the hippos mouth open, so it’s spirit can be released and returned to the river” As someone who has hunted in my life frequently, usually hunting white tail, sick white tail in missouri with diseases and other small animals like coyotes and rabbits. I’m in no way superstitious whatsoever, but the way that it seems to me is, once you kill these animals, their spirits are with you. You must thank them for what they have given you. And you must respect them and their way of life. I’m not sure if I’m wording this correctly but I hope someone can understand with me on this level.
@mountainmanjim6366

I was taught some hunting tips as a kid from an Indian. The entire experience is more than I ever expected and still carry the tradition. You pray before the hunt, you respect nature and show mercy, and love for the animals you hunt. These animals challenge humans but give their lives to us for nourishment, clothing, shelter and tool. Like they give to us, we give back. Their spirits only transfer back into the wilderness upon a "good hunt" or you will feel the weight of the animal.

Animals are innocent creatures, because they act on instinct, not out of anger or hatred. It’s sad what happened to these people, it would be awful to lose someone that way. And it’s unfortunate that the animal was too aggressive to continue living in the river. But the animal acted according to the laws of nature, and doesn’t deserve hatred or disrespect. The whole situation was tragic. I hope these people can find peace after losing their loved ones.
