Hey rick a question for experience drivers, the faster we drive the more distance we need to leave between the vehicles so we could be able to stop on time?
@smartdrivetest
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris UK - That's why following distance is measured in time - it's relative to speed. At 50km/hr (30mph) we're travelling at approximately 14m/s (44ft/s). At 100km/hr (62mph) we're travelling at 28m/s (90ft/s). Therefore in town at a 3s following distance we're 52m (132ft) behind the car in front. On the highway, we're now 84m (270ft) behind the vehicle in front. Thus following distance in time. See this vid on how to measure following distance in time: kzitem.info/news/bejne/q5WLsYKFgHxjp4o Drop us a note if we can help further. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hey Rick, how do you know if you can do the "jig jag" or S maneuver to see past the car in the left turn lane? it's hard to tell if the other side has a dedicated left turn lane or not, so to not block traffic in the case of a left and straight lane, how do you tell which lane is which so you know when you can do the manuever?

Through lanes are the lanes of traffic that move through the intersection. As opposed to slip, HOV, or turning lanes. I would further counsel you to book a practice driving test with a local driving school to work in the area around the test centre where you're going to be taking your test. The driving instructor will be able to give you specific answers to driving situations specific to the are in which you're going to be taking your test. Cheers Rick

Hi Rick, I have a quick question. When driving at higher speeds on back roads or the interstate how do I keep my vehicle centered in my lane? I find myself when driving on these roads at higher speeds drifting off to the right side of the road. I don’t know if it’s my anxiety or me tensing up from being on such busy roads for the first time. I’ve also noticed that when I am driving and I see a car passing in opposite direction of me I tense up! Am I fighting the steering wheel or what? UPDATE: I passed my drivers test 3 days ago!!

Hi Rick, quick question for you. Is it reasonable that my driving instructor says that instead of being able to see the tires meet the pavement, to leave a cars length in between the front of my car and the back of another when stopped at a red light? I understand leaving some room in case of emergency, but does that sound a bit too much to you?
@smartdrivetest
4 жыл бұрын
Hi ToxicColin17 - You're driving instructor and I are saying the same thing. If you can see the tires making clear contact with the pavement, it's approximately one vehicle length. However, the way I say it, the technique works for any vehicle from motorcycle to tractor-trailer. And if you say 1 vehicle length, how does a driver know what that is? It's a bit like saying: "how long is a piece of string?" If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

If I can add one thing that I learned…when you are driving on the highway and leaving plenty of space between you and the driver in front of you, you are allowing those impatient and speeding drivers to find a way to continue their driving choices without tailgating you which reduces stress. Forgetting about whether or not they should be speeding and weaving between lanes(obviously not), if everyone maintains space between cars, It does reduce the collective stress of dealing with those folks who use the highway as their personal race course. Cheers

Rick, I need some help. I was driving in Western Ontario recently and it was the first time for me to drive in a mountain area. I felt very uncomfortable, especially on left turns. I literally was afraid to drive too close to a road edge and tried to place my car closer to the median. I experienced some really scary moments when there was incoming traffic on my left turns. On one side there was an approaching car, and on the other side there was an abyss. The limit was 90, but I wanted to slow down to 50-60, I couldn’t help it. What can I do with it? Thank you.

Speaking of blind spots, I have what might be a tall-guy issue. My rearview mirror creates its own blind spot off to my right and up. This becomes evident when I am in the rightmost lane, and I am approaching a parallel merge lane that happens to be a bit uphill, descending as it approaches the main section of road. As cars move downhill and approach the lane-change-to-merge section, they enter my blind spot if I'm not monitoring their speed closely and adjusting mine. If we wind up driving at the same speed, they are invisible to me. Shoulder-checking becomes very important in this situation, especially since most people won't adjust their speed or position in order to target a safe gap to merge into.
@smartdrivetest

Thank you John for your great story there. Each person is going to have different challenges depending on what vehicle they're in. And as you pointed out, it is super important to continue to shoulder check so that you can see other vehicles around yours and manage that space. All the best, Cheers Rick
