In many situations phosphorous accumulates in the soil above plant needs, typically this can be where effluent is disposed, paddock close the dairy or night paddocks and in cattle camps. Recent trials funded by the Marine Estate Management Strategy and conducted on Jones Island, confirmed this is the case showing no response in ryegrass to added phosphorous on old effluent paddocks with a high Colwell phosphorous test. In these situations, it is important to stop using phosphorous fertiliser and over time allow the soil phosphorous to decline to acceptable levels but continue with other nutrient especially nitrogen which can provide large profitable benefits. This video shows the trial results and how to manage high soil phosphorous levels to prevent unnecessary loss to our pristine waterways.
