I always love to hear you talking about the different tree species and how you view them. It great to get a sense of how the enviroment youre in is connected and what makes each smaller section special.

I've heated with wood for almost 50 years, cutting a lot of my own. In my experience, poorer tree species are all burnable as long as you are home to feed the stove. Overnight and being gone for the day requires good hardwood species. Nice job!

Where I am, Birch is the best firewood available :) We only really have Pine, Spruce, Birch and Alder... That said, Pine and Spruce in a wood gasification boiler works great: Pine generates more wood gas quickly than other wood. No creosote build-up either due to the high temperature, almost no ash, and a hot fire, which is what you want in this kind of boiler.

breakfast part II .... why not take cuttings of the trees you want in late spring ... even the red maple and beech ... root them in willow tea (bark branches leaves of willow steeped in sun heated water) ... this is a natural rooting hormone and next spring you can plant those saplings where you like and start the next generation of trees ... yes sugar maples as well ... perhaps plant some apple trees in the more open areas near the forest edges for the animals and you to harvest from ... . dont forget to gather the grass seed stalks and then you have free grass seed for spring to scatter for the animals to eat from all over ... it also will stabilize the soil and in the sandy areas will keep it in place in heavy rains gather a bunch of chestnuts and acorns as well for growing and later planting .... also you can bundle the smaller hard wood branches into log sized portions and burn those faggots of wood (yes that is what they are called) to augment your hard wood needs while burning the softer woods (grass cordage works great to bundle them and is easily found and made on site when you gather you branches ...

best thing for forrest renewal is controlled fires /brush hogging! take it in 25 square yard bites the floor of the forrest is renewed and enriched! This routine maintenance allows for best management Just be careful to manage the heat away from the desired species trunks and to replant the desired ground cover after the burn! Many extend wild berries and other desirable plants to attract wild life and improve the diet at the dinner table! In such a way 1 or 2 people can work the farm! By having controlled burns this checkerboard management ensures less danger from wild fires which also renew but also are indescriminate about other destruction! You got buildings and gardens etc.but the goal is to preserve and flourish! In this case shawn you can assure your area!

There is going to come a time when you can not take any more wood from your forest if you want a forest , I am not sure how much land you have . My grandpa took fire wood from his forest and in a few years the land was all parked out , no more wood to take , he was a very smart man and he did it in a way that it made his forest healthy , the trees were able to grow faster and stronger and in 15 years the canopy from the trees shaded the whole land , it was beautiful.

The 'SJ' channel is also a chance to expound on his philosophy, his beliefs about the specific subjects. But now he has a podcasts developing, so I don't know where that fits in.
