The author is the military Kapellmeister of the regiment Ilya Shatrov.In February 1905, the 214th reserve Moksha infantry regiment fell into the Japanese encirclement during the heavy fighting between Mukden and Liaoyang (see the battle of Mukden) and was constantly attacked by the enemy. At a critical moment, when the ammunition was running out, the regimental commander, Colonel Pyotr Pobyvanets, gave the order: Kapellmeister Shatrov led the band to the parapet of the trenches, gave the order to play a battle March, and led the band forward behind the regiment's banner..
