Maniac Mansion is a fantastic point-and-click adventure on the NES, and what other game allows you to microwave a hamster?

Such an amazing game. When I was in high school we had a really friendly cafeteria lady named Shirley at our school. She would call us all “Dearie” - “What would you like to eat Dearie?” so in my head I would think to myself “Does she play Maniac Mansion?” (1:34:01). Awesome

Another classic I didn't get to play back when it was new, and trying to play the sequel at my aunt's house on PC always crashed. IIRC, one of the characters says, "Don't be a tuna head!" in this. They don't make 'em like they used to!
@Dorian_Scott

It's funny because in the PAL version, they removed the ability to microwave Ed's hamster. Meaning Nintendo of America was completely unaware of the fact that the devs somehow snuck _that_ in alongside every change that was made in order to meet their standards.
@bigduke5902

I would bet ANYTHING that there are now at least eighteen hundred indie games "inspired by" games like this that do, indeed, in a dead tired reference to this game that everyone played, allow you to microwave a hamster.

Can't put into words how much I love this game. Had the immense pleasure of meeting The Fatman himself, George Sanger about 20 or so years ago, and got to let him know how much I loved the soundtrack. All around one of the best games ever made.

That's awesome! I never met him but he had a brief conversation with me in the comments of one of his covers here on KZitem just days ago. I knew of him but had no idea that he actually co-wrote the soundtrack, it felt great to let him know how much of a presence it had in my life.

This game is one of the big ones. It had a major influence on my burgeoning taste at the time and really captured my imagination. I rented this one a lot and played and replayed the hell out of it when I first discovered emulation. And to contradict a ton of the comments here, NONE of us Nintendo kids knew a thing about how this was censored from an original version. We liked it for what it was because we didn't know any better and it was all we had. Reading some of these comments, you can really tell the difference between kids who have benefited from the 20/20 Wikipedia-vision and adults who were actually there. Information doesn't equal experience and nobody is impressed by trivia.

My brothers and I would play this a lot as kids. We often got games from lots at this auctions my parents went to every week, and sometimes they'd have boxes with mixed stuff in it, and occasionally they had Nintendo games in them. So every once in a while we'd luck out. It's how I got acquainted with gems like Nightshade, Mega Man 2 and 3, Maniac mansion, Superman, and River City Ransom. 2:43:37 - That moment right there, when you open the door using the combination of 0000 has to be one of the proudest moments in gaming for me, and I wasn't even playing. You see, I was a still very young, and I really wasn't capable of playing this effectively. I could only mimic things I saw my brothers do and not get far doing even that. Shit, I had to be like 6 or 7. But my eldest brother would play, and as long as HE had to think about it, and I could just concentrate on watching, I understood the story and why we had to do certain things only after he did them in the game. He was in his teens and was way more age appropriate for the thinking level required. Often, I could tell that he was bothered by me always following him around or watching him play, but I just wished that I could play that well and I was just happy watching. Anyway, one day when he got to that dungeon, for whatever reason, he didn't know the code. He didn't know how to get it, we didnt have the guide because it was from a box we got at an auction. And often I would say suggestions that he'd just ignore because truly they probably were just nonsense. But I was just trying to put 2 and 2 together. And I don't know what was going through my kid mind, but I told him "try all zeros", and the door clicked and opened. And I'll never forget as long as I live, my brother turned his head towards me really fast and he had this really serious, and almost confused look, and he had like this slight gleam and subtle smirk on his face. I felt so proud, like I personally saved the day and I helped him solve everything LMAO Even thinking about it now, I get teary eyed as I laugh because it just such a random thing that happened and I still carry with me til this day - How just a random little stroke of luck made me feel so important and included in this long story that I would sit through, even when I didnt feel welcome 😁😁 Its sounds dumb, but I also laugh when I think about the fact that things were way different after that 😆😆 He would actually take my dumb little suggestions seriously. Eventually I got older and we played streets of rage 2 together. We eventually "crossed the line" 😆😆 that means I beat him in street fighter. And then life happened. We haven't talked in 2 years since out other brother passed. But when I think of Maniac Mansion, I always remember how I slipped in at the last for the hail Mary save ✊🏼

Another classic adventure game by Lucasfilm/LucasArts! This was a must-own on your PC in the 90s as one of the most influential and iconic point-and-clicks ever made. To this day, it's still very enjoyable, the puzzles, humor and multiple endings (depending on which characters you choose) sustain its longevity in adventure gaming.

@@NintendoComplete Yup, I personally really loved that they made it a 'seamless' interface in that way. I.e., it wasn't just some menu disconnected from "inside the game", it was actually "instantiated" in the game in that way. Of course, I happened to really like the music in this game and didn't have the experience ChaNo wrote about. But, I can absolutely understand and identify with that experience - playing a port of a game and feeling like it wasn't as good in some way due to changes, so, I empathize for sure.
