There's a void where Richey should be that will never be filled. But that being said, the Manics have stood the test of time and remained an integral and influential act even to this day.

There seems to be two "Siamese" bands.....Ritchie Era and the post Ritchie era.... As much as I liked EMG it seemed........ Empty..... Then to see the Manics, fiercely intelligent, politically savvy, with an agenda....... To be "flavour of the month" , the Adidas clad masses at gigs, joined on stage by Liam Gallagher.....the polar opposite of Ritchie. Some bands can't exist without a member.... Led Zep, Joy Division without Ian..... Queen with no Mercury.... And while it was no secret that JDB'NW, SM was the "potatoes" of the bands, Ritchie was the flavour. The conceptualist, the muse ,the "ideas man".....

Fabulous performance. As has been said, when you know what they were coming to terms with the signs of pain being slowly overcome seem visible. But what makes the Manics great, apart from consistently brilliant songwriting with Richey and afterwards is their sheer musicianship and commitment. The keys are filling out the sound just a little, but overwhelmingly its being produced by three instruments and a voice. One aspect of JDB’s brilliance as a guitarist is that he can play quite complex arpeggiated lines while singing an equally complex vocal. And yet there’s no solemnity, just serious passion. Glorious.

I remember seeing this at the time, a great performance. Looking back it seems like there was a long time between The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go, but it was only around 2 years or so. That kinda blew me away. I think James still had some of the Holy Bible-era venom during this era, he seemed for want of a better word quite unapproachable. Still, understandable really, this was still hot on the heels of the whole heavy Holy Bible period/Richey disappearing. I'd suppose the band getting massive after that would be bittersweet. (The intro the presenter gave is reason enough to get a bit annoyed..).

I thought he was using a Boss DD3 or some similar Delay Pedal or maybe a Roland Space echo. Didn't think about a loop station pedal. Only a few months after this I see MSP at TFI Friday doing Kevin Carter and James had no pedals on the floor in front of him, his guitar tech was hidden behind his amps changing his guitar sound for him.
