Imagine your on a jeep tour through the mountains of Colorado and the guide points to a peak and says, “Those steps on the side of that mountain right there are Manitou Incline. That Incline has an elevation gain of 2,000 feet, it’s almost a mile long and you have to hike thousands of steps to get to the top. 2 people have died and Apollo Ohno ran it just under 18 minutes. It’s an extreme hike.”
Would YOU do it?
If your me, you look right at your husband and say I’m definitely doing that. Then you immediately text a friend that you know has your kind of crazy ambition and say “let’s do it”.
Manitou Incline is a bit of an icon in this area of Colorado. Partially because it’s such an intense fitness challenge hiking at such a steep grade, but also, it has some of the most incredible views. Even if you aren’t a fitness buff, the views alone make it worth it.
The incline ascends on the east slope of the Rocky Mountain on the eastern flank of Pikes Peak. If you want another challenge after the incline, check out the 13 mile hike up Barr Trail to Pikes peak. That one has also been added to our list.
The trail is located in Colorado Springs. It is the remains of a former narrow railway. In 1990, the tracks were washed out during a rock slide. Currently, the top step is number 2,768, but we were told it changes with deterioration.
Manitou Incline Tips
1. Make a reservation, and do not wait until the day of or the day prior. Reservations can be made on the City of Colorado Springs website, and It is totally free to hike. I highly recommend early morning in the summer. Think 6-7am. Now for us, that meant waking up before 4am in Denver to get to Colorado Springs by 6, but it was so worth it!
2. Parking is another animal. Ownership of the incline and it’s parking rights are a bit controversial. The trailhead is co-located with the Barr Trail trailhead and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. All 3 sit on a narrow canyon and the popularity of the incline creates major parking issues. The land the incline sits on is actually owned by Colorado Springs at the base, Pikes Peak Cog Railway in the middle and the top is managed by the US Forest Service. What does this mean for parking? Lucky you, they ask for proof that you did NOT park at Barr Trailhead or the Cog Railway. They do have a parking lot with a free shuttle service about a mile away that is all outlined in your confirmation email. It will cost you $1 an hour, and I would give yourself 3-5 hours. Why so long? That brings me to another tip.
3. Give yourself ample time to take in the view and then walk the 3.5 miles back down the Barr Trail. Unless you are a frequent flyer up the incline, I just wouldn’t recommend going down the steps. The Barr Trail is beautiful, and you can descend without steep steps and competing with the heavy traffic coming up. So in total, you are looking at 4.5-5 miles. That’s no stroll. The average person hikes up in 30 minutes to an hour, and then add another hour for your hike back, minimum.
4. Bring water. I drank no water on the way up, but I chugged it at the top. Leave more water in the car. There are no water stops or bathrooms along the trail. This might be popular, but it’s still a hike in the woods.
5. Altitude is no joke. I had been in Denver for almost 2 weeks before doing the incline, and it was a struggle. If you’re a weekend warrior, just make sure you prepare for the elevation gain and the workout at that altitude. Take BREAKS. Drink plenty of water, and no the signs of altitude sickness. The incline STARTS at 6,000 feet and ends at over 8,000. That’s really high. Your body loves oxygen, you know what there is less of at that altitude? Less oxygen. More than 25% less than sea level. I live in Florida. Air is my constant companion, so I was huffing it from the get-go. Less oxygen means your heart must work harder. That’s great for training, but not so great if you do too much too fast.
