The lecture, "Mystical Meanings of Playing Cards" was given by Manly P. Hall on November 9, 1980 in Los Angeles. Hall discusses many types of symbolic cards from the I Ching to Tarot, and goes deeper into the symbolism of everyday playing cards. He considers how the images and their meanings have changes over time and across cultures.
The CC Subtitles have been conformed to match the original edited transcript, once available as Lecture Note 287.
Historical Context: At the very end, he mentions the Shah of Iran (Mohammad Reza Pahlavi), who had been overthrown the previous year (1979) during the Islamic Revolution. This lecture was given just 5 days after Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in the 1980 US Presidential election, and the Iran Hostage Crisis was a major factor in the race. After 444 days in captivity, the hostages were released the day President Reagan was inaugurated in office, January 20, 1981.
