aurelie's version has such a worldy, womanly quality to it. It's beautiful to watch.

You guys *have* to rewatch this for the people in the background 😂. So much is happening back there, and it's hilarious! I feel like I've watched two seperate shows at once! These guys are all so good at performing!

I agree. We hear about the great training for POB students. The few excerpts that we have seen look amazing. Yet for some reason, for me, it doesn't translate on stage. I can't put my finger on the exact reasons why. Apropos this excerpt, I agree she is cold -- doesn't project well -- flat. She also looks large -- often a problem with POB costuming, I think. Costuming interests me. It can make or break a ballet. Those white tights look really terrible with that particular costume.

I think what bothers me most is that her upper body hardly moves. I have the same opinion about the stark contrast between training and performances. They always seem to want to reduce ballet to clean lines, and emotion takes a second place. Compare this to Tamara Rojo, who is adorable on stage, and in this particular variation very sensual, in my opinion because of her arm and shoulder movements.

Aurelie Dupont said herself that there is a sort of composure typical for Paris Opera School. Her performance in this extract is full of sensuality and elegance in a French way I guess (but that's only my opinion and I am French, I can't deny I am very biased ;-) )

I'm not so sure that she is cold or flat and there's certainly no evidence of either of those in the pas de deux, etc. but if she is rather emotionless mightn't that be because this particular scene requires it? Rojo plays it more coquettishly but I much prefer the calculating, precise Dupont. POB dancers can look somewhat lost on the Palais Garnier stage as there is an awful lot of it to fill. The sets are always that bit more exaggerated and it may follow that the costumes need to be, too. With Manon Lescaut, though, the French are very much on home turf and it shows. Everything about Monsieur GM's costume is exquisite - wigs, in particular, often seem tricky to get right but he really does look like he stepped straight out of 18th century Paris. @@normamimosa7295
